# Determining Maximum Weight of Trailer That Can be Towed by 2005 Excursion 4x4 Diesel

Question:

I have a 2005 Ford Excursion 4X4 Diesel. It weighs 8,500lbs with a full tank, people and gear. GVWR on the door states 9200lbs. Max trailer is 11,000lbs and the GCWR is 20,000lbs. Using a Weight Distribution hitch, Can I tow a trailer that weighs 11,000 and not exceed the GVWR of 9200lbs that my truck has?

To determine the maximum trailer weight that can be towed, you will need to subtract the GVW (gross vehicle weight) from the GCWR (gross combined weight rating). The GVW is the curb weight of the vehicle, plus the cargo. GCWR is the maximum allowable weight for the trailer plus the tow vehicle.

Given the figures you provided, when the GVW is subtracted from the GCVW, 11,500 lbs is the result, and would represent the maximum amount the trailer plus its contents can weigh.

This being said, be aware that your towing system is only as strong as its lowest rated component. If the rating of your hitch and other towing components are equal to or greater than your loaded trailer weight, you should be fine.

If the weight of your fully-loaded trailer is indeed 11000 lbs and the tongue weight of the trailer does not exceed 1500 lbs, I would recommend the Reese Heavy Duty Trunnion Weight Distribution System, part # RP66131. This system is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 800-1500 lbs. Keep in mind that the weight of ANY CARGO STORED BEHIND THE REAR AXLE of the tow vehicle needs to be considered as trailer tongue weight. If you are concerned about trailer sway, or have had a problem with your current set-up, I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # RP66130. The Strait-Line system uses the Reese Dual Cam sway control that will actually stop trailer sway before it can begin.

Either system will require a weight distributing shank, like part # RP54970 and a trailer ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank like part # C40041.

I have linked to the instructions for the systems I recommended.
