What you can do is use a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed to test the wires on the factory harness. The brake controller red wire is for input from the brake signal on the truck. When you test the wires, you will need the one that shows a signal on the tester only when you step on the brake pedal. If the wire shows a signal at any other time, like when the headlamps are on or turn signals are on it is not the correct wire.
For the remaining wires on the brake controller, the white wire is ground, the black wire is 12 volt power, and the blue wire is output to the trailer brakes.
The other option is to use the wiring harness # 3050-P. This adapter plugs into the 6-pin connector on your vehicles built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.
