My 2008 Ford F350 owners manual calls for a 3156 or 3156k bulb.I purchased your bulb and found out that my bulb is different.

You are correct, the Hopkins Backup Alert, # HM20100VA, that you purchased is designed to replace an 1156 style bulb and will not fit in a 3156 style socket.
The Hopkins Backup Alert that is designed to work in a 3156 style bulb socket, is part # HM20101VA.
