Question:
I am having trouble with the electric brakes on a utility trailer locking up. I checked the wiring and determined which wire is the brake wire on the 7 way. When I tested it, it is hot all the time so its acting like the 12v wire. Is that correct? When I test all the other flat pins, they test out ok. It seems to me that when one applies the brakes the brake controller should apply the power to the brakes? This is a motorhome on a freightliner chassis. I also notice that when the exhaust brake applied, it seemed to apply the trailer brakes. Any input would be appreciated to determine what I need to do to continue to figure this out.

The 6 and 7 pole plugs occasionally have the wires for the brake controller and the hot lead switched which would cause the brakes to have power all of the time. I'm not that familiar with exhaust brakes, but if your controller is inertia activated it may be sensing the deceleration of the vehicle when the exhaust brake is used thus activating it.
