will this bike rack work without damaging the trunk of the Sonata? Will it fit and function properly? Thanks.

The Yakima QuickBack 3 Trunk Mount Bike Rack, # Y02622, will fit your 2008 Hyundai Sonata. We have not had any complaints regarding the QuickBack damaging the trunk of any vehicle so it should work fine on your vehicle.
You will want to stay within the capacity of the bike rack, 90 pounds for 3 bikes. If your trunk and bumper have a weight limit (which you may be able to find in the owners manual) that is less than 90 pounds, you will need to go by the lower limit.
Another tip I can offer is to make sure that the vehicle and bike rack are clean of any dirt or debris that could potentially scratch the paint. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.
If you will be carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bikes, I recommend using the Yakima Tube Top Adapter Bar, # Y02531, in order to carry the bikes more level. I have included a link to a video showing how the adapter works.
