Question:
I recently installed a curt class 1 receiver hitch CT11447H on my 2009 HHR. I am considering buying the 20 x 48 cargo carrier by curt, #C18145, from you if this will work without alteration or extensions.

The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on your CURT Hitch # 11447 out to the furthest point on your 2009 Chevy HHR will be about 6-1/2 inches. Check out the video I attached that shows this hitch installed on an HHR and has that measurement.
The Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier # C18145 that you referenced has a distance of 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin out to the nearest upright portion of the cargo carrier so it would not be a good choice for you.
I would recommend a Draw-Tite Hitch Cargo Carrier # 6500 as it has an adjustable track that lets you place the tray of the cargo carrier from 5-1/4 inches to 11-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin. This would give you the clearance to use this carrier on your vehicle and the flexibility to let you use it on other vehicles as well.
