I would recommend a proportional-type brake controller for the smoothest and most reliable braking. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 is very easy to use and is our best selling brake controller.

To install the controller, you will need a 4-pole trailer connector if you do not already have one. If your Ranger has the factory Tow Package, use part # 118241 or part # 118325 for no tow package.

You will then need our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. The kit contains everything necessary to install a controller, including wire, the 7-way trailer connector, circuit breakers and all hardware.

I have also linked you to an install video that shows how the install kit is used. The video features a different vehicle than yours, but the install would be similar enough to be helpful.
