I have a 2001 f350 sb with rails mounted but are they in the same location for a fixed and a slider or are they mounted in different locations depending on the fixed or slider hitch option? thanks

If the 5th wheel rails installed in your 2001 Ford F-350 are Reese, Valley or Curt rails, they will accept either a Reese, Valley, or Curt fixed 5th wheel hitch or a slider hitch without having to make any changes to the rail spacing. But it may help to loosen the rails to better line things up correctly when installing a different hitch.
Since you have a short bed truck, you will need a slider. The sliders that offer the most travel are round tube sliders at 12 inches of travel. For a 16k round tube slider hitch, you can use # RP30075. For a 20k round tube slider, use # RP30083.
