What Parts are Needed to Add A Brake Controller to a 2004 Toyota Tundra with Tow Package

Question:

I have a 2004 Tundra with tow package installed. I just purchased a used Tuff Cat horse trailer. My question is trailer brakes: I do not have a visible electric brake controller in my cab. Does that mean I am pulling that trailer with no trailer brakes? If that is so, what do you have that I need to fix this problem?

If your trailer has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. It sounds as if you are currently towing the trailer without brakes, a practice I would not recommend. I would suggest using a proportional brake controller. They read the braking force you are applying the truck brakes and match it to make braking as smooth as possible.

Since your Tundra has a tow-package, your truck is pre-wired for a brake controller and has a socket underneath the dash that a brake controller can plug into. Simply mount the controller, plug it into the truck, follow the instruction manual to set it up and you are ready to go.
