1967 Aljo Camper Trailer Swaying Dangerously Behind a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser

Question:

I tow a 1967 Aljo camper trailer, with a 2000 Land cruiser. Ive already jackknifed it once when I didnt load it properly. Now I know to put as much of the weight up front near the hitch as possible. My problem is that its still squirrly. I get so nervous whenever I go for a weekend camping trip. I do have weight distribution arms and a sway bar but it still gets dangerously swayie. I was told that my weight dist arms was taking too much weight off the hitch therfore causing the problem. SO i tried it without and it seemed to help a little. Then I was told that the trailer should be at most level to the car or even pointed slightly downward. Can you give me some advice?

Expert Reply:

First of all, you did the right thing by moving more weight forward. Now, you will want to get your trailer as level as possible. You could try letting your weight distribution chains out (loosen them) by 1 chain link, and see if that helps the situation. Then, examine your suspension on the trailer. Is everything in good shape? Nothing bent? You will want to rule out anything there as being a cause of the problem. If the problem still occurs, you might want to consider upgrading your sway control system. The Dual Cam High Performance Sway Control System, part # RP26002 is our top of the line system that will actually prevent trailer sway from occurring before it can even happen.

I attached installation instructions and an installation video for the # RP26002, as well as an FAQ article on weight distribution systems for you to check out also.
