Brake Controller Causes Trailer Brakes to Lock Up and Not Release

Question:

i have a brake controler on my 96 ford F350 POWER STROKE DIESEL,and when using my 6 pin receptical,when i step on the brake the trailer wheels lock up,but dont release when i get off the brake pedal,there is some delay before the trailer brakes release.whats wrong??

Expert Reply:

I would start by examining your trailer brakes. If the shoes or springs are very worn, and are out of adjustment, they could be causing the brake assembly to hang up, or stick. You can use a circuit tester, like part # 40376, on the blue wire exiting the rear of the brake controller, and check for voltage when the brake override switch is activated. If the voltage disappears immediately once the switch is released, you'll know that it is the brakes hanging up, and not the brake controller malfunctioning.
