The factory wiring harness is located either behind the bumper or above the spare tire. It is pretty easy to locate because it will have wire loom wrapped around it, and a round plug covering the end. The 7 and 4-way mounting bracket will be attached to the bottom of the bumper, the plug covering the rear of the harness will be removed, and the harness plugged into the rear of the connector. This is a pretty simple install, you should have no trouble at all.
If you click on the provided link, you can see a video that will walk you through the install. The video shows this connector being installed on a 2001 Tahoe, but the procedure would be the same as your 2001 Silverado 2500HD.
If you plan on towing a larger trailer in the future that has electric brakes, a brake controller will need to be installed. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885-3025P. The controller includes the wiring adapter that allows the controller to plug into the tow package port under the dash.
Depending on how your truck was equipped by the factory, you might need to make additional wiring connections under the hood to activate the circuits that feed the brake controller. For more information about installing a controller on your truck, use the provided link to our Brake Controller Install FAQ page.
