Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2003 Honda Element

I am looking to put a trailer hitch on my element because I love to fish and need tthe room inside for my dogs. I thought I could get a hitch and buy a bumper buddy to hook up so I can carry my gear on the bumper buddy. The only catch here is the state of NC recently passed a law that prohibits concealing the license plate. So what I need is a hitch to mount in the front of the vehicle as NC does not require a plate on the front. Do you have hitches that will mount on the front of a Honda Element, and is there any drilling required for such an install?

For your 2003 Honda Element, I do have a solution for you, but there are no front mount trailer hitches available for your vehicle. Instead, you can use a rear mounted cargo carrier and simply relocate the license plate to the back of the carrier to be in compliance with state law.

First, you will need a trailer hitch. I recommend Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87506, that you have referenced. This is a class III trailer hitch so you will have plenty of tongue weight capacity, 350 pounds, and more options for carriers with the 2 inch receiver. I have included a link to the installation details for reference.

You can then add the Pro Series 24x60 Railed Cargo Carrier, # 63153. This carrier will slide into the trailer hitch and provide cargo space and tie down points for your gear. You can then add Trailer License Plate Mount Bracket, # LP10SB, to relocate the license plate. I also recommend adding a light kit, # 20174, if the gear obstructs the rear tail lights.

For the light kit to work, the Element will need to have a functioning 4-Way trailer connector at the back. If you need to add one, you would need T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 118336.
