can you actually cook on the Fire Dance fire pit with the grill in place or just heat a coffee pot or do you have to use a skillet and does that mess up the pit.

Yes, you can cook on the Fire Dancer Portable Patio Fire Pit, part # FD500. If you were to use the Grill Accessory for Fire Dancer Patio Fire Pit, part # FDGRILL, like you mentioned you could grill just about anything you like.
Check out the review video of this product below, it shows some hot dogs being grilled using the # FDGRILL. With that being said, I would recommend that you clean out the # FD500 after you cook food in it, of course after it cools down.
