How To Wire A 1998 Allegro Motorhome And Tow Dolly For A Brake Controller

Question:

I have a 1998 40 Tiffin Allegro Bus diesel motor home. It does not have a pre-installed wiring harness so Im not sure how I can wire up a brake controller. My tow dolly has electric brakes and has a 7 pole connector but only 4 wires are being used for the lights. So, Im looking for a kit that has all the wiring I need with Instructions how to wire it up to a brake controller. I have not purchased a brake controller yet please recommend one for my RV. Thanks

The brake controller I would recommend for your 1998 Allegro motor home is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller, part # 90885. The Prodigy 2 brake controller is our best selling model. It can be mounted in a 360 degree vertical range and will level itself automatically. It is a proportional brake controller which means that the brakes are applied to the tow dolly at the same time and same strength as the brakes on your vehicle. I am including a link to the installation instructions for the Prodigy P2 brake controller.

To wire the Prodigy P2 brake controller to your motor home you will need the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7, and about an extra 40 feet of 10 gauge duplex wire, part # 10-2-1. The # ETBC7 kit comes with 25 feet of duplex wire, but since you are needing it to run the length of your 40 foot motor home you will need the extra wire. I am including a link to a FAQ page on how to wire the # ETBC7 kit to your motor home.

You will also need to install a 4-way on the rear of your motor home for the 7 and 4-way adapter from the # ETBC7 kit to plug into.

If your motor home has a 2-wire combined wiring system (brake and turn are same wire) you will need the Draw-Tite 4-Pole Hardwire Kit, part # 18252. Using the included tester to test the wire functions, and quick splices, this kit will tap into your taillights of the motor home.

If the motor home has a 3-wire separate wiring system (brake and turn are different wires) usually indicated by amber turn signals, you will need the Tow Ready Wiring Kit, part # 119175. This kit includes a converter that adapts the 3-wire system to a 2-wire system.
