Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for Towing a 5800 GVW Heartland FX23 Camper

Question:

My TV is a Dodge Dakota rated to tow 5750#. My probable TT is a Heartland FX23 5800# GVW and 518# TW. Do you recomment the 600 or the 800 trunion bars? I will be using the HP SC on this rig. Thank you,

To haul a trailer with the weight you listed, I would recommend that you use a Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control, part # RP66073. When you pick out a weight distribution system, you want to make sure it has weight capacities that encompass the weight of the trailer you are planning on towing, as well as any weight that will be loaded behind the rear axle.

With that being said, I can not safely recommend you pull a trailer that weighs more than what your manufacturer recommends as the towing capacity. Although it is only 50 lbs more than your 2005 Dodge Dakotas weight capacity, you need to consider that the 5800 GVW of the Heartland FX23 is an unloaded weight. As soon as you add in luggage, coolers, etc. you will be well over the weight capacity of your Dakota.
