what is the coloer code on the Pilot # 80550 brake controller
asked by: Jamie B
The wire color codes on the Pilot Brake Controller are as follows: the red wire interfaces with the vehicle brake system by tapping into the cold side of the brake stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. The best way to locate the correct circuit to tap into would be to use a circuit tester like part # 40376. There can be several wires coming out of the switch, you will need to probe them with the tester until you locate the circuit that only goes hot when the brake pedal is pressed. Once located, tap the red wire into this circuit.
The white wire is the ground connection, which needs to be grounded directly to the negative battery terminal.
The black wire is the power supply, and should attach to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp in line circuit breaker (whichever the the brake controller instructions call for). We offer the breakers, part # 9506P for the 20 amp or part # 38630 for a 30 amp.
The blue wire carries the output voltage for the controller, and would attach to the brake output pin on the trailer connector.
We offer a brake controller install kit, part # ETBC6 for a 6-way trailer connector or # ETBC7 for a 7-way. The kit includes everything necessary for installing a controller, including the trailer connector, the breakers mentioned above, and all wire and hardware.
I will provide you a link to our brake controller installation guide that you might find helpful.
