Question:
I have a Toyota Matrix 2010 and would like to add a trailer hitch to it. I saw both Curte 12228 and 12221 will fit my car model. What are the difference between them and what is your recommendation?

The two Curt Class II Receivers offered for your vehicle, parts # 12221 and # 12228 have the same weight capacities and install in the same manner. Part # 12221 is constructed of round tubular steel that many find more attractive than the square tubing from which part # 12228 is constructed.
If your Matrix is the XR or XRS model, minor trimming of the lower bumper fascia might be required.
If you are planning on using the hitch for towing purposes, you will also need the T-1 Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118460 to provide a connection point for your trailer lights. A draw bar and pin and clip are included with the hitch, but a trailer ball is not. Your trailer should have the required ball size stamped on the coupler. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-82 or part # A-80 if a 1-7/8 inch ball is needed.
If you are planning on using the receiver as a mounting point for a bike rack or other non-trailer load, Curt states that a support strap, part # 18050 must be used or the warranty will be void.
For your convenience, I will include links to the installation instructions for both receiver hitches as well as the wiring harness. We also have an installation video that you might find helpful. The install shows part # 12228 being installed on a 2009 Pontiac Vibe, but the installation would be the same on your Matrix. I will provide you a link to the video as well.
