The Master Lock Wireless Backup Camera and Hitch Alignment System, # 4843DAT, is designed with a 4-Way that plugs into your existing 4-Way trailer connector, so as it is, it will require turning on the running lights to operate. It is not recommended to splice into the reverse light circuit or cut off the connector when installing the camera . It will also void the warranty if installed in this way.
The way around this is instead of cutting the plug off of the camera, you could use a standard vehicle side 4-Way harness, like # 18252. You would then need to connect the white ground wire on the harness to a clean and corrosion free metal surface. Next, connect the brown wire on the harness to the reverse light wire behind your vehicle taillight assembly. The remaining wires would not be needed.
Installing the brown wire on the harness to the reverse light wire would make the camera function like a backup camera, turning on when the vehicle is put into reverse.
I have included a link to an installation and demonstration video below.
