Question:
Hi, Im looking at these two racks for my 2006 Honda CRV. I want to know if Ill be able to put the mount/adapter on the spare, and then put the wheel cover on I have the hard wheel cover...until I want to put the actual rack on the adapter. See, I want to keep the wheel cover on AND not have to put the mount on every time I want to put the bike on. And so, Id be able to leave the mount and wheel cover on...and when I want to use Id attach the bike rack to the spare tire mount/adapter. Is this possible? How much does the adapter stick out from the wheel before putting the rack on? Is there a difference in this between the Yakima and the Thule? Thanks!!

I walked out to our warehouse and pulled part # Y02598 and measured the distance from the back mounting plate to the furthest point on each extension. The extension will need to be mounted to the mounting plate before mounting the spare tire. The extensions measured, 3-3/4 inches, 5 inches, and 6-3/4 inches. You will need to measure from the mounting plate on your vehicle out to determine which extension you will need to clear the spare tire and be able to mount your spare tire cover on your 2006 Honda CR-V.
Another spare tire bike rack that I would recommend is the SportRack 3 Bike Carrier Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack, part # A30813STL. Part # A30813STL, has a mounting extension that does not stick out far past the spare tire, instead there is an arm connected to the bike rack itself. Part # A30813STL, will allow you to mount just the mounting plate and mount your spare tire cover. We have a video of part # A30813STL mounted to a CR-V that I have linked below.
If you will be carrying, childrens, womens, or bikes with an odd-shaped frame, I would recommend the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar, part # Y02531. Part # Y02531, will allow you to carry childrens, womens, or bikes with odd-shaped frame level on your bike rack and will work for either bike rack.
