How far back from the normal driving position does the telescoping bars travel. What is the max extension. Please let me know. Thank you.

The GearCage Twin Tube Slide-Out Extra Large Cargo Carrier, item # 5800400, slides out a maximum of 20-1/2 inches from the towing position.
This carrier is not designed to be transported with the carrier slid out away from the rear of the vehicle. The extra torque applied to the trailer hitch could cause the carrier, hitch or vehicle frame to fail. The extension is only designed for access to the rear of the vehicle.
