Question:
I have pretty much settled on the 66074 system for my rig based on experiences of friends who have them. Is the 12000# system correct for my 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD pulling a nearly 8000# GVW 2007 18 Work and Play tow hauler? If so what is the best shank to work with this combination, the 63970 or the 63971? Is there any thing else that needs to be ordered other than a ball?

Expert Reply:
The Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # RP66074 would be ideal for your vehicle/trailer set-up. With an 8000 lb trailer, tongue weight is typically figured as between 10 to 15 percent of the trailer weight. Even if the tongue weight of your trailer is closer to the high side, you will have enough capacity in the system.
To make an approximate determination of which shank is needed, jack up your trailer so that it is level, and measure from the bottom of the coupler to the ground. Add an inch or two to this measurement to account for sag when the trailer is hitched. Measure from the top of the hitch receiver on the vehicle to the ground. The difference between these two measurements will be the rise or drop needed. Shank part # RP54970 or # RP63971 are compatible with the Strait-Line system. You will need nothing else but the appropriate trailer ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90 or part # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
