Question:

I bought this product a couple of years ago, it failed last summer. Last fall I finally checked it and found the problem appears to be in the converter. I have the input for the Right turn signal, but no output. Is the converter bad, or could there be a problem further downstream? It works sporadically according to my Brother-in-law who was following us and brought the issue to my attention. It seems there are a number of folks having the same issue with these converters, is this a common failure?

From the diagnosis you provided the converter on your Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, item # 118369, has been shorted. I spoke with my contact at Tow Ready to find out and this is not a common occurrence.

Most of the time when a converter is shorted it can be attributed to a trailer problem. If you tow a boat with the Grand Cherokee the problem may have occurred if the trailer was backed into the water with the wire connection connected to the vehicle, or if the connector was connected while water remained in the tail light after pulling the boat out of the water. It is a good idea to unplug the trailer wiring before launching a boat and wait a bit after pulling the boat out of the water for the trailer lights to drain.

If there is a problem on the trailer installing a new converter will result in the same shorted condition so you should check the trailer out before connecting it to the vehicle with the new converter installed.

Once you have the trailer checked and fixed, if need be, you can then safely install a new wiring harness and converter for towing.
