To install the Hayes-Lemmerz Energize III Electric Trailer Brake Controller, # 81741B, there are a couple of things you are going to need. Besides your brake controller, you will need 2 wiring harnesses. First, if your vehicle does not already have a 4-way connection, you will need the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118316. I have included the instructions and two videos that feature this harness.

Next, you will need Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. I have included two videos showing installation of this kit as well.

Finally, I also included a link to our Brake Controller Wiring from scratch FAQ that provides step by step instructions on installing a brake controller. The most difficult part, which is not very difficult at all, is testing the brake pedal wires to find the one you need for brake controller installation. All that you need is a circuit tester, like the Quickee Circuit Tester, # 3808, to find the wire that only carriers a signal when the brake pedal is pressed.
