Wiring A 2008 Toyota Highlander for Towing a 1996 Flagstaff Cobra Camper with 6-Way Square Connector

Question:

I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander and I just purchased a 1996 flagstaff by cobra camper that has a 6 way square plug. I recently installed a 4 way flat plug on my car and I am wondering if part 30104 will work to convert the 6 way to a 4 way plug. I understand that the trailer brakes wont work and that the battery wont charge. Thanks for your help.

Jayco uses a different wiring code than most, so in all likelihood, it will not work. I would just cut off the 6-Way square, tape off the brake and battery wires, and connect the 4 wires to a new 4-Way flat connector like part # 9653P.

A better solution may be to install a more common 6-Way Round trailer connector on the vehicle and trailer. You could use the Pollak 6-Pole, Round Pin, Trailer Wiring Connector, item # PK11604, on the trailer end and a 4 Pole to 6 Pole Adapter, item # 30637. This would allow you to add the trailer battery charge wire and trailer brake function, with the addition of a brake controller.

To install the connector on the vehicle side you would just plug in the 4-Way connector and then run a length of wire, item #10-2-1 to the engine compartment of the vehicle. Attach one end of the black wire to the black wire on the # 30637 connector, and the other end to a 40 amp circuit breaker, item PK54540. Then, attach one end of the white wire to the blue wire on the # 30637 connector, and the other end should be ran through the fire wall for connection to a brake controller of your choosing. The white wire on the # 30637 connector should be grounded to the vehicle frame.

I would recommend a Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885 for your vehicle and trailer, this controller has 4 wires that will install as follows. The white wire is grounded to the vehicle battery, the black wire is connected to the positive battery post through a 20 amp circuit breaker, item # PK54520. These wires are installed with a length of the # 10-2-1 wire also. The red wire from the brake controller needs to be attached to the stoplight switch wire, behind the vehicle brake pedal switch. This wire can be located using a circuit tester, item # 3808. The blue wire is then connected to the white wire from the back as mentioned before.

After the vehicle wiring is complete, you will need to use a circuit tester to determine which function is which on the trailer, then connect each wire to the proper terminal inside the 6-Way trailer end connector. We have a wiring page that shows the connector terminals and their functions, and we have step by step wiring instructions for you to review before starting, see link.
