Volkswagen GTI Questions

  • We do indeed have a confirmed hitch fit for your 2015 Volkswagen GTI with gasoline engine. Curt offers their light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch # C11355 for your car. This hitch offers a 200-lb tongue weight rating and is suitable for use with compatible Class I accessories like bike and cargo carriers. Please note that a Class I hitch has a maximum bike-carrying capacity of two bikes and no more (no matter what the carrier's capacity is). This has to do with the leverage...

  • We do have M6 carriage bolts that are 80 mm long, check out the Thule Xadapt3, part # THXADAPT3, which comes with eight, 80 mm, M6 carriage bolts. The wingnut that you referenced, Thule Replacement Wingnut, part # TH04877, will work with the 80 mm carriage bolts # THXADAPT3, and the 75 mm bolts, part # TH915-0675-11, and # TH10403.

  • For the Tow Ready Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with Install Kit, # 119190KIT, we do have a wiring installation instructions technical bulletin for your 2010 Volkswagen GTI. I will send you a link to this bulletin. We do not have any wiring diagrams for the 2010 Volkswagen GTI because the manufacture does change, quite often, the color connections on the wiring systems, so it is hard to maintain the correct diagrams. If you have any...

  • There is currently one hitch that we offer for your 2015 VW GTI Autobahn. It's the Curt hitch # C11412. It is custom fit for your GTI but it will be visible when not in use because the receiver tube is flush with the crossbar. This is a Class-I hitch and the maximum gross trailer weight is 2,000 pounds and tongue weight maximum is 200 pounds. The trailer hitches # 24925 (Draw-Tite) and # 60362 (Hidden Hitch) you referenced fit a 2015 VW Golf and not your 2015 VW GTI Autobahn. If...

  • To start, lets look at trailer hitches. There are 3 hitches for the 2012 Volkswagen GTI, see link. I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24904 over the Curt hitch # C11000. The reason is that Curt requires the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for their warranty requirements and the Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch trailer hitches do not. Since you are going to use the hitch for a bike rack, you would not need the ball mount that comes with the Hidden Hitch so Draw-Tite...

  • For a 2007 Volkswagen Golf GTI, I recommend using the Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with Install Kit, # 119190KIT. I have included a link to the installation details for reference. You will want to follow the installation steps for a 3 wire system. If your system has combined stop and tail light functions, what you will do is attach the red stop light wire to the corresponding stop light wire on the vehicle. The brown running light wire...

  • I wish I could provide you with a definitive yes or no answer, but we have not yet had the opportunity to install a hitch on a 2013 GTI, so we do not have any dimensions telling us how far the receiver will be recessed under the vehicle, which is the key indication of whether a bike rack will be compatible with a given vehicle. If you already have the hitch installed, you would simply measure from the hitch pin hole rearward until you reach the furthest rearward point of the...

  • A lock for the Thule K-Summit chains like # TH02230K23 is not available. The thinking is that the weight of the car is a deterrent (for any chains) and some one would not only have to have the proper tools but also a jack to jack up the car to get the weight off the chains to even begin thinking about taking them off. Of course since these chains are relatively easy to put on/take off, the best solution is to remove them if you will be away from the vehicle for extended periods...

  • I went into our showroom and measured the Thule Helium Aero Aluminum 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9042, as well as a Kuat Beta Folding 2 Bike Rack, part # B202-114, and found that they both had the same distance of 34 inches from the shank of the hitch up to the arms of the rack. It looks like the Thule Helium Rack will have 3/4 of an inch more of a distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright bar of the rack. Aside from that these racks are very similar. The main...

  • The maximum recommended speed for the Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Cables, part # PW1930V, is 30 MPH. With any snow cables or snow chains, you want to stay below the maximum speed rating of the tire cables or chains. We do not have available any snow chains that are able to be used when traveling 50 MPH or faster. You should not use snow chains on dry or uncovered pavement, only when there is snow or ice on the ground. When mounting snow chains on your vehicle, it is most effective...

  • We currently have a few trailer hitch options that will fit all models of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI. You can use Curt trailer hitch # C11000, Draw-Tite hitch # 24904, or Hidden Hitch # 60330. Please consult the vehicle owners manual first if you plan on doing any towing. The correct ball mount for use with this hitch and vehicle is # C45016 for the Curt, # 3594 for the Draw-Tite, and the Hidden Hitch includes the ball mount. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch...

  • Before buying snow tire chains you will want to check your owners manual or with the Volkswagen dealer, to see if you can install snow tire chains on your 2010 Volkswagen GTI, or if there are any limitations. A 4wd vehicle is nice to have in the snow, but the tires make a difference and how somebody drives with the 4wd can make a difference. The 2010 Volkswagen GTI is a front wheel drive vehicle which is designed for performance and handling so it will use the larger 17 inch...

  • Exhaust rattles do occur on some vehicles. I have not had the opportunity to install this hitch on the GTI yet so I spoke with my contact at Draw-Tite. He stated that the exhaust was taken into account when designing the hitch and that they have had no complaints about exhaust rattles from customers who have installed the hitch. The instructions for the # 24904 hitch show that hitch will be sandwiched between the rear exhaust hanger and the vehicle frame member. This repositioning...

  • There are no trunk mounted bike racks that would allow you to open the hatch with the rack in place. Having the rack in place would add additional weight that the gas struts that hold the hatch open might not be rated for. The extra weight could cause the hatch to unexpectedly slam shut, likely causing injury. Also, shutting the hatch with the rack in place can damage the painted surface of the hatch or the rear glass. Since the rack needs to be removed to access the hatch,...

  • The Hidden Hitch Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 60330, will end up being located in the same place as the Curt Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # C11000, on your 2011 Volkswagen GTI. It is located right under the rear fascia of your vehicle. The ball mounts that are used with these hitches will always have to be used in the rise position. I am including a link to the Installation instructions on both of the hitches. The instructions will show a side view of where the hitch...

  • Curt requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050 when using trailer hitch # C11355 for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements. This is regardless of the amount of weight that is on the hitch. There isn't a specific place that you would have to attach the strap to the vehicle. What I recommend is to use the strap with a quick loop # TH530. Just close the cylinder part inside of the vehicle leaving the strap loop hanging...

  • The newer Volkswagen vehicles can be sort of an enigma in terms of trailer wiring. But I will be glad to help you out. There is actually a tech bulletin for this vehicle that I have linked for you and I have included the text below. Locating the correct wires on the vehicle to hook up a trailer wiring harness. These vehicles have a multiplexed wiring system that sends multiple signals (turn, brake, and tail) along the same wire. Use only a wiring harness that has a circuit...

  • The main difference between the Curt Hitch # 11074 and the Draw-Tite Hitch # 24825 / Hidden Hitch # 60212 is like you already noticed, the Curt is a round tube and the others are square. Generally speaking, most people agree that the round tube style hitches look less visible. It also helps that the Curt has brackets that do not come down on either side of the cross tube as far either. I think the Curt hitch would be the best choice for you as it be less visible for the...

  • To see how much overhang a 53 inch # THARB53 will have over the edge of your 2015 Volkswagen GTI check out the picture I attached. There is a chance the 47 inch crossbars part # THARB47 could fit, but it would be too close to call. And since it's never been tested I can't recommend it for you. To complete the roof rack you would need the fit kit part # THKIT1710 and # TH480R.

  • Curt hitch, part 11074, was designed to fit the factory body trims. If the ground effects you have are aftermarket or dealer installed, the hitch may not fit. I have added a link to the instructions for the hitch below that include a profile diagram of where the hitch sits in relation to the rear bumper cover and some of the undercarriage. Take a close look at the diagram and compare it to the body on your GTI. It should give you some insight as to whether or not the hitch will fit.
