Volkswagen GTI Questions

  • We do indeed have a confirmed hitch fit for your 2015 Volkswagen GTI with gasoline engine. Curt offers their light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch # C11355 for your car. This hitch offers a 200-lb tongue weight rating and is suitable for use with compatible Class I accessories like bike and cargo carriers. Please note that a Class I hitch has a maximum bike-carrying capacity of two bikes and no more (no matter what the carrier's capacity is). This has to do with the leverage...

  • A sunroof would not be a problem for Thule Rapid Traverse foot pack # TH480R because the feet rest at the outer edges of the roof like in the video I have linked for you. You will also need AeroBlade bars # THARB53 and fit kit # THKIT1710. It is not recommended to open the sunroof with a roof rack installed. The bars could be in the way and, even though the AeroBlade bars are quiet it would probably be louder than you'd like if you were able to open the sunroof.

  • We have exactly what you would need. First let's start with a roof rack, for that I would recommend the Thule Roof Rack that consists of # THARB53, # TH480R, # THKIT1323. I attached an install video for you to check out. An excellent carrier to use with this rack would be the Thule SUP Taxi Part # TH810XT that you also referenced.

  • We do have M6 carriage bolts that are 80 mm long, check out the Thule Xadapt3, part # THXADAPT3, which comes with eight, 80 mm, M6 carriage bolts. The wingnut that you referenced, Thule Replacement Wingnut, part # TH04877, will work with the 80 mm carriage bolts # THXADAPT3, and the 75 mm bolts, part # TH915-0675-11, and # TH10403.

  • For the Tow Ready Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with Install Kit, # 119190KIT, we do have a wiring installation instructions technical bulletin for your 2010 Volkswagen GTI. I will send you a link to this bulletin. We do not have any wiring diagrams for the 2010 Volkswagen GTI because the manufacture does change, quite often, the color connections on the wiring systems, so it is hard to maintain the correct diagrams. If you have any...

  • I can help you identify the right hitch for your 2016 VW GTI. The hitch that fits the 2016 GTI is the Curt Class I hitch # C11412, not the Draw-Tite # 24904 you were looking at, which is great news because that hitch required some trimming but this Curt hitch does not. To install the Curt hitch # C11412, you will have to temporarily lower the exhaust while installing the hitch but there is not drilling or cutting to be done. It's important to note that Curt recommends the...

  • There are no trunk mounted bike racks that would allow you to open the hatch with the rack in place. Having the rack in place would add additional weight that the gas struts that hold the hatch open might not be rated for. The extra weight could cause the hatch to unexpectedly slam shut, likely causing injury. Also, shutting the hatch with the rack in place can damage the painted surface of the hatch or the rear glass. Since the rack needs to be removed to access the hatch,...

  • I wish I could provide you with a definitive yes or no answer, but we have not yet had the opportunity to install a hitch on a 2013 GTI, so we do not have any dimensions telling us how far the receiver will be recessed under the vehicle, which is the key indication of whether a bike rack will be compatible with a given vehicle. If you already have the hitch installed, you would simply measure from the hitch pin hole rearward until you reach the furthest rearward point of the...

  • The G10 offers a bit less clearance between the rack and the vehicle than the XTC-2. To determine if the G10 will fit your 2010 VW GTI, you will need to measure the distance from your hitch pin hole rearward to the furthest part of your rear bumper. If the measurement is less than 12-1/8 inches, the rack will be capable of installing on your GTI. If your measurement is less than 6 inches, the rack will be capable of folding. If you click the provided link, you can see some...

  • I recommend using a heavy duty vehicle wiring harness # 119190KIT because it includes circuit protection to safeguard itself from electrical shorts. Vehicles using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) will give your trailer lights full brightness during activation. This hasn't been tested on the GTI models yet, but my contact at Tow-Ready confirmed that it will work with the 2015 Golf and would work with the GTI just fine even though it isn't published as a fit in our fit guide. We...

  • For a 2007 Volkswagen Golf GTI, I recommend using the Upgraded Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with Install Kit, # 119190KIT. I have included a link to the installation details for reference. You will want to follow the installation steps for a 3 wire system. If your system has combined stop and tail light functions, what you will do is attach the red stop light wire to the corresponding stop light wire on the vehicle. The brown running light wire...

  • First you are going to want to check the vehicle owners manual to determine the towing capacity of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI. As long as it has the capacity to handle the combined weight of the trailer and motorcycles then you can install a hitch and tow that trailer. The hitches available for the 2013 GTI, see link, are rated for a maximum of 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 200 pounds tongue weight and that includes Curt hitch # C11000 that you have selected. I actually...

  • The best trunk mount bike carrier I can offer for your 2016 Volkswagen GTI is the Thule Raceway # TH9001PRO. I own an older version of this carrier and it is by far the best trunk mount carrier I have used. The 4 retractable cables are easy to use and more durable than nylon straps. This carrier also has superior cradles to better protect the bikes and a built in cable lock, and cable access lock to deter theft of both the bikes and the bike carrier. I have included a link...

  • To determine if the Swagman XC Bike Rack part # S64650 would fit on your 2007 Volkswagen GTI with a Curt hitch # C11074 you need to take one important measurement. You need to measure from the center of the hitch pin out to the furthest point out on the rear of your vehicle. If that measurement is less than 10-1/2 inches the # S64650 would fit and work well. The # S64650 has a distance of 10-1/2 inches from the center of its hitch pin hole to the nearest wheel mount.

  • There is currently one hitch that we offer for your 2015 VW GTI Autobahn. It's the Curt hitch # C11412. It is custom fit for your GTI but it will be visible when not in use because the receiver tube is flush with the crossbar. This is a Class-I hitch and the maximum gross trailer weight is 2,000 pounds and tongue weight maximum is 200 pounds. The trailer hitches # 24925 (Draw-Tite) and # 60362 (Hidden Hitch, no longer available) you referenced fit a 2015 VW Golf and not your...

  • I went into our showroom and measured the Thule Helium Aero Aluminum 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9042, as well as a Kuat Beta Folding 2 Bike Rack, part # B202-114, and found that they both had the same distance of 34 inches from the shank of the hitch up to the arms of the rack. It looks like the Thule Helium Rack will have 3/4 of an inch more of a distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright bar of the rack. Aside from that these racks are very similar. The main...

  • Exhaust rattles do occur on some vehicles. I have not had the opportunity to install this hitch on the GTI yet so I spoke with my contact at Draw-Tite. He stated that the exhaust was taken into account when designing the hitch and that they have had no complaints about exhaust rattles from customers who have installed the hitch. The instructions for the # 24904 hitch show that hitch will be sandwiched between the rear exhaust hanger and the vehicle frame member. This repositioning...

  • The newer Volkswagen vehicles can be sort of an enigma in terms of trailer wiring. But I will be glad to help you out. There is actually a tech bulletin for this vehicle that I have linked for you and I have included the text below. Locating the correct wires on the vehicle to hook up a trailer wiring harness. These vehicles have a multiplexed wiring system that sends multiple signals (turn, brake, and tail) along the same wire. Use only a wiring harness that has a circuit...

  • Before buying snow tire chains you will want to check your owners manual or with the Volkswagen dealer, to see if you can install snow tire chains on your 2010 Volkswagen GTI, or if there are any limitations. A 4wd vehicle is nice to have in the snow, but the tires make a difference and how somebody drives with the 4wd can make a difference. The 2010 Volkswagen GTI is a front wheel drive vehicle which is designed for performance and handling so it will use the larger 17 inch...

  • The maximum recommended speed for the Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Cables, part # PW1930V, is 30 MPH. With any snow cables or snow chains, you want to stay below the maximum speed rating of the tire cables or chains. We do not have available any snow chains that are able to be used when traveling 50 MPH or faster. You should not use snow chains on dry or uncovered pavement, only when there is snow or ice on the ground. When mounting snow chains on your vehicle, it is most effective...
