This SkyBox 18 from Yakima is so loaded with features, it's hard to imagine there would be any room left over to hold your gear. In fact, it has 18 cubic feet of storage space. Couple that with all the great features and you have yourself a knockout storage system for the top of your vehicle.

The SkyBox features aerodynamic styling, engineered to reduce drag and wind noise, so it rides quietly and never becomes a distraction. The box has a flat base for easy, on-car adjustment and an undercut tail that provides generous clearance for your hatchback.

The SkyBox lid is home to the vast majority of its exciting features, including its ability to open from both sides. No matter where your box is mounted on the roof, the dual-sided opening allows for easy access. And the lid sits on spring-loaded hinges, so opening it will never be a problem.

The lid is made three times stiffer than other Yakima cargo boxes, a feature that helps to reduce vibration associated with the road and also makes opening the box easier. An easy-to-grab edge on the lid provides a better handhold for wet and cold conditions.

SkyBox boasts a top-of-the-line SuperLatch security latch on both sides of the hull. The latch ensures that the lid is securely anchored to the base and seals tight to keep the elements from infiltrating your box. Both security latches include Same Key System (SKS) Locks, which allow all your Yakima locks to be keyed alike. The key cannot be removed from the lock unless all three interior latches are secured, preventing you from driving off with an open box. Turning the key also does not open the box. To open the box, you must turn the latch.

SkyBox comes ready to go out of the factory box, with no assembly required. The box clamps to your round, square or factory crossbars with integrated clamps that adjust and tighten with a cam-action lever mounted inside the box. The lever slides along a track and is tightened and released by hand knobs.

Also inside the box is an integrated track system for mounting your gear. The track system is designed for use with the SkyBox Cargo Net (Y07146), sold separately.

SkyBox comes with a premium, scratch-resistant, black matte finish that keeps it looking great on top of your vehicle for years after purchase, and its durable, ABS plastic construction prevents the box from warping, denting or cracking.

• I walked out to our warehouse and measured the inside of the Yakima SkyBox 18 Cargo Box, part # Y07181. I measured a length of approximately 78-1/2 Inches or 199 CM of space without interfering with the hinges of the Yakima Skybox. You will be able to fit skis that measure 78-1/2 Inches or 199 CM in length into the Yakima SkyBox 18. • The Yakima SkyBox 16 is a fit for the factory crossbars on your 2006 Jeep Commander. The crossbar spread will need to be between 24 and 48 inches. An optional cargo net, part # Y07146, is also available. The net is pretty useful for keeping any smaller objects stored in the SkyBox from shifting around during travel. • The Yakima SkyBox 18, # Y07181, measures 92 inches long. Chances are that the box will either overhang the roof or make contact with the rear hatch or both on your 2008 Infiniti FX-35. If your crossbars are adjustable and you can move them forward, and then adjust the box to be more forward, it can probably clear the rear hatch but will most likely overhang in the front. • The Yakima SkyBox, # Y07181, has been updated, though I do not know if it was because of the issue you have described. Yakima has updated the latching mechanism from the old ball catch to super secure hook and post. They also made the front and rear drive bars move independently. They changed the lid supports in February 2010. And upgraded to a Zinc die cast handle in October 2010. We carry the most current version of the box.
