Clearance Formula:
Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A + B) - C = Clearance
A= Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab
B= Length of Sidewinder arm (16K = 22")
C= Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 20" = 56". If your fifth wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 56" - 51" = 5" of clearance.

Sidewinder premium fifth wheel pin box coupler

1. Sidewinder Pivot Point - 20" behind the king pin
2. Rotating Turret - attaches to the pin box on the trailer
3. Universal King Pin Locking Wedge (not pictured) - prevents pivot at fifth wheel hitch
4. Fifth Wheel King Pin - attaches to the hitch in the truck bed for towing
5. Sidewinder Standard Arm - rated at 16K

Sidewinder premium fifth wheel pin box coupler eliminates need for wide turns

Nimble and quick. Up to 90-degree turning.
It is now possible to turn the short-bed truck 90 degrees with no fear of contact between the truck's cab and the coach. The included universal king pin locking wedge prevents the trailer from turning/pivoting at the trailer hitch. The rotating turret allows turning/pivoting to take place an additional 20" away from the cab.

Hitch Specifics and Wedge Locations
1. Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch and Reese 15K, 16K and 20K Select Series, Husky, Owens, Valley and similar units
2. Reese Signature Series and similar units
3. Holland and similar units

A. Bolt locations
B. King pin

Custom Wedges: The included universal wedge works great on preventing the king pin from rotating in most fifth wheel hitches. However, Holland and PullRite hitches will require a custom wedge.

Hitch Problems: The Sidewinder models will work well with all fifth wheel hitches, except for the Curt Q5 and the B&W Companion. The Curt Q5 cushioning allows too much movement for the Sidewinder to operate properly. The B&W hitch requires two additional bolts (1/2", grade 5) to be installed at the rear most support to keep the hitch from rotating. Check with B&W about warranty regulations.

  • Is it Safe to Use a Sidewinder Replacement Pin Box
  • No, there are no real draw backs to using a Sidewinder. It will not solve all short bed clearance issues. This will depend on the truck and the width of the trailer. On 6 foot or 6-1/2 foot beds, you do not have to use a Sidewinder. A Sliding Fifth Wheel hitch is sufficient. Some still prefer to use the Sidewinder as it does not require you to un-lock and lock the fifth wheel as you do with a Slider. If you write back with the truck you have and the bed length, I can provide more assistanc

  • Can A Reese Sidewinder Be Used with a Pullrite Super Glide
  • In most cases, a Sidewinder does not need to be used with a slider fifth wheel. If I recall correctly the Pullrite Super Glide is the slider that automatically unlocks and slides rearward. This would be a problem with a Sidewinder. A Sidewinder can be used with sliding fifth wheels that are locked in the towing position and cannot slide out on their own. If they did, the pin weight is moved so far behind the rear axle that it could cause the truck to lift off the front wheels. If you have a 6

  • Dimensions of Pin Box Coupler # ST400 and What Pin Boxes it Will Fit
  • I certainly can. I went out to the warehouse and pulled the mounting part, # ST400, and did the measurements myself. The Sidewinder Rotating Turret Premium Pin Box Coupler, # ST400, is made to fit pin boxes: Leland 7910, 7920, and 7921; 5AB-E7920; Demco-GR19LND7920; Trail Air-L08; Mor RPB72-7920. If looking at the box from the side, it is 13-1/2 inches long at the base, and 9-3/4 inches long at the shortest point (nearer the top). It is 8-1/8 inches tall at the tallest point. It is 5-3/8 in

  • Difference in Leland Pin Boxes And What Sidewinder Needed For 2006 Dodge Ram
  • The Leland pin boxes 7910, 7920 and 7921 are all different model pin boxes that just fit different trailer applications. The 7910 pin box is a standard type and the 7920 and 7921 pin boxes are extended type. The Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret, # ST400-SW16K, is listed as the Sidewinder to fit all three of the Leland pin boxes. I am sending a page link to show what sidewinder fits what pin boxes. I could not find a pin box with a number 7900. I called our suppl

  • Do Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turrets Reduce Trailer Sway
  • The main feature of a sidewinder like the Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret, # ST400-SW16K, is that it offers 22 inches of clearance. In terms of sway, the unit itself does not have a sway control system. There are measures you can take to help reduce the amount of sway you experience while towing your 5th wheel trailer. You will need to make sure the pin weight (like tongue weight) is 15 to 20 percent of the gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow. Many 5th wheel sw

  • Will A Sidewinder Give Enough Clearance For 5th Wheel Hitch On 2008 Ford F-150 Supercrew Short-Bed
  • Yes, you are correct, a Sidewinder will allow sufficient clearance between your 2008 Ford F-150 short-bed truck and your trailer. In fact, you must use a Sidewinder with a fifth-wheel hitch for any truck bed under 6 feet. With only 2 inches of clearance though, you may not be able to make 90 degree turns in all situations, I would recommend being careful in tight turning situations. When installing a fifth wheel in the bed of your 2008 Ford F-150 you will need to measure to make sure that the

  • Can a Sidewinder Be Used On Trucks with 6 foot Beds and 8 foot Beds
  • Yes, the Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret by 5th Airborne, 16K, part # ST400-SW16K, can be used on trucks with 6 foot beds and 8 foot beds. It will allow you to make sharp turns in the 6 foot bed truck without having to get out of your truck and move a handle every time you need to make tight maneuvers, as well as improve the handling characteristics of the truck with the 8 foot bed. I have attached an FAQ article below on sidewinders below that you might find helpful.

  • Could I Use a Sidewinder to Pull a 5th Wheel Trailer with my Ford F150 Crew Cab with a Short Bed
  • Yes, a sidewinder would work to allow you to pull a fifth wheel trailer with your truck that has a 5 foot 7 inch. You will need to know what model pin box you have on your trailer, and then you could pick a sidewinder that would work for you. I attached a link below that has a chart that shows what sidewinder model fits on what pin box. It also has a formula you can plug the measurements of your trailer into to determine if a sidewinder would work for you.

  • Which Sidewinder Works for a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 Short Bed Towing a Montana 36 Foot Fifth Wheel
  • The Sidewinder couplers are custom designed to replace the standard king pins on fifth wheel trailers, like your 36 foot Montana fifth wheel trailer, so you will need to find out the part number of the pin box (king pin) on your trailer. The pin box number is either on a sticker on the pin box or it will be stamped on the pin box itself. If it is not there or is worn off you will have to contact the trailer manufacturer with the VIN or serial number so they can provide you with the pin box n

  • I do have a solution for you to be able to use a gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitch in your 2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty, but you will need to remove your B and W gooseneck hitch, so that you can install a rail kit for your Airsafe Air Ride fifth-wheel hitch. For a rail kit, you will need to use Reese Fifth Wheel Installation Kit, part # RP30035. Then, for a gooseneck hitch, you will want to use Pro Series 25K Gooseneck Plate, part # 49080.
