Today we are going to show you part number SC500 from Rage Powersport Products. What this is is a hitch-mounted wheelchair carrier and scooter carrier. This cargo carrier can also be used for a variety of other things, aside from the original purpose. What is nice about this is it actually comes with a 5-foot-long ramp to easily roll up your wheelchair or scooter onto the carrier itself. It uses a hinged, bi-fold ramp design It can also double as a regular cargo carrier. It comes complete with built-in tie-down mounting points, and also included is an anti-rattle device. And one last thing about the ramp itself is it can actually fold completely flat into the platform when you are not using it. Now we will cover some more of these features in a little bit more detail.
One of the first features we will show you is the anti-rattle device. As you can see here, we have installed a typical 2-inch receiver hitch. It is not hooked up right now, but this is the part right here that makes it an anti-rattle. What this does is, when your carrier is plugged into the hitch and securely attached with the pin, this plate goes up here. And on the bottom are three screws. These three screws actually tighten up against the bottom edge of the hitch and pull the cargo carrier down and clamp it into one position, where it cannot go anywhere. And you tighten those three screws down with a 17-millimeter socket.
The next feature we are going to show you is that the whole carrier can actually tilt up when you are not carrying anything in it. So you will not have a carrier hanging out the back of your vehicle unnecessarily. This is the pin right here. Pull out the safety clip. You may need to pull a little bit of the tension off of it. Pull off the pin, push it back into position, and replace the pin. There you have it: when you are not using it, you do not have to have it hanging out for no apparent reason. Next, we will unfold the bi-fold ramp, which is the best part of this carrier. It has a neat little pin release here. Just pull up the pin and grab the handle and just pull it right up. And also you have got another pin back here that allows you to keep the door up in an upright position when you are carrying something inside of it and then hold it open still and unfold your ramp.
Now we will go ahead and demonstrate the ramp itself. We do not have a wheelchair or anything like that but we will actually use a lawnmower here and roll it up on here to give you a better idea of how much room it takes and how easy it is to do it. We have our lawnmower in place, properly centered over the cargo carrier. All we need to do now is just go ahead and tie it down. It has got plenty of hooks right here - four on each side to tie down your equipment. Same thing on the opposite side, as well as two on the non-ramp side of the carrier. One nice little detail on here is it has carrying handles built into it also. It also has a nice rubber lining in there a little easier on your fingers as you are taking the unit on and off of your vehicle. All right, and that covers it for part number SC500.

I had been lamenting about shoveling snow from multiple locations for a while. My Snow Blower (Ariens ST824) is at my personal residence, but I keep my landscaping trailer at one of our rentals' garage. I have a Ford explorer which cannot be used to transport the Snow Blower (too big) unless I use the trailer, and I can't get to the trailer when the snow is bad. I was just starting to consider purchasing multiple Snow-Blowers to keep at different locations (pitiful idea!). The SC500 is EXACTLY what I needed to solve the problem. Not a trailer but strong enough to carry my machine. And it's lightweight enough to be stored at my residence with the Snow Blower. The ramp makes it easy to load the heavy blower on board, and the fold-away feature when not in use completes the package, and allows me to always be ready. Now I can clear my residence, help the neighbors (when I'm feeling ambitious), load the machine up and take it to the rental property and our commercial space.....saving me hours of backbreaking snow removal by hand, and no embarassing calls from the cops about clearing the sidewalk! I should have searched for this thing years ago. Now, I can't wait for the next big storm to hit NJ, but with my luck it probably won't snow again til next year now that I have my perfect solution. I'd recommend this to anyone who needs a compact, lightweight, carrier. It actually saves me time and money (no need to hire anyone to remove the snow), and grants me the opportunity to make money by removing snow from other people's property if I chose to do that. Excellent Bought this to transport a 26" snowblower and I couldn't be happier. I did a bunch of research and was slightly skeptical as this was the least expensive one I could find that had a ramp attached but as soon as it arrived and I assembled it I was very pleased. I assembled it in the middle of a snowstorm and had no problems at all (other than when the directions blew away - but that's because I'm a dope). etrailer's follow up after the purchase was great and it arrived faster than I expected. Product is built sturdy, but be careful! Let me start by saying that I have several hitch mount products such as a large 4 bike carrier also so I am a bit familiar with products pull down for use and fold up vertical when not in use. Whenever you fold the product to or from the vertical position..."HOLD IT TIGHTLY" There is no safety stop and it will just fall past the 90 degree mark smashing into the vehicle. This means you have to hold the unit with one hand while setting up the pins and fumbling with multiple components. Here's the best part! The bracket that is installed that holds the ramp in position sticks out about 5" more than everything else on the right side and if you are not very careful then it very easily hits the suv door and leaves a nice dent in your vehicle. I can see this happening multiple times over time. This is a stupid design flaw that causes damage to vehicles and could be easily corrected by the Rage the Mfg. simply by reviewing other tilt up carriers which have more common sense built into them. Etrailer however has been excellent in all my purchases over the years and this product was deliverd to my dock on one day! Good job Etrailer! That's why I keep sending my friends to your site. 27699

the price of the scooter carrier was in my budget and just what we were looking for i have been recently disabled do to cancer that has spreed threw my body at the age of 51 we have been very lucky so far . someone had donated a used scooter to me and we had know way of getting it around and due to doctor bills money is getting very tight we were pleased to find your product so easy for her to operate for me it was everything you said it would be thank u for your prompt delivery even thou we really couldn't afford it. it was allot easier on our pocket then another choice. i would like to find an inexpensive cover for my scooter so she doesn't have to unload it every night i didnt see one on your website but thank you for your product 9867

Good Carrier Carrier does everything I wanted it to do. Reasonably priced, Shipping was excellent. Because of over travel past pin support hole when folding platform against vehicle ramp bracket could hit tailgate of vehicle. Drilled hole and bolted rubber damper to prevent over travel. 3965

Well-versed product Attaches to my SUV(05 Dodge Durango)when needed. Pros: haul extra baggage/luggage(easy access), 24" wide snow blower, lawn mower(handle folded), 4 cylinder engine block (heavy). The long ramp helps during loading/unloading of wheeled items (snow blower,lawn mover.) Cons: Unable to open hatchback(rear door) when carrier is loaded which is expected and depending on cargo. If used with 06 Jeep Liberty, carrier will not stow(fold up)due to clearance of spare tire mounted in the rear door. 3483

I bought this product because it came with an attached ramp, rubber covered hand holes to make installing easier on the hands. I wish there were an additional pin to keep the carrier from hitting the tailgate when it is being folded up when not in use. The only additional items I still need to purchase are holddown straps and an outdoor grill cover to keep the chair dry in bad weather. etrailer may have these items, but I didn't see them.21035

The description of what is provided with the SC500 needs to be improved. Included is a bolt that locks the SC500 into the receiver and doubles as the anti-tilt add-on. Also, included is an anti-tilt add-on if one chooses to use a 5/8" receiver pin rather than the 1/2" bolt system. I purchased both a 5/8" pin and an anti-tilt add-on and didn't need either. The ramp was purchased to transport a lawn mower or snow blower as needed using my 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. For that purpose it works very well. Suggestions to the manufacture would be 1/4" reflective poles that fold down to help locate the back of the carrier when backing up with the unit extended. Also, an option for a wheel to go in the back square opening to assist getting the unit installed into the receiver by only 1 person. I haven't tried it yet, but suspect to remove the ramp from the receiver, it would be best to have it folded up for better control. Having the unit folded out and pulling it out of the receiver is not easy as it should be, but there are no indicators as to when the receiver is almost out and when it pops out, it ends up bouncing to the ground and depending on where your fingers are, could give one a nice bruise under a finger nail. I'm still figuring out how to install and remove the unit without any help, but I think I've got if figured out.20625

I'm rating the SC500 Hitch Mounted Carrier an 'Excellent' for its features, ease of assembly and use. Just a word of caution, one of the supplied bolts broke while tightening and I fear that may be due to their origin. Be careful on how tight you make them!19148
