Video Transcript for Swagman Camper Roof Mount Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to be showing you part number S80550 from Swagman. This is their pop-up camper, roof mount, four-bike rack. A couple of features about this rack are that it does carry up to four bikes as we stated before, it fits on the roof of most pop-up trailers, it is really light duty, so there is not much weight up on the roof, it is constructed entirely out of aluminum, which is nice so you do not have to worry about rust or corrosion on it. Also it has foam bumpers on the legs to help prevent wear and tear on the camper"s roof. Also the adjustable tire rails can accommodate three bike styles, including the touring bikes, standard bikes and mountain bikes. It also comes complete with a set of tie-down straps, some bungee cords and hardware to secure the rack to the roof of the trailer itself. What comes with the roof rack is the tie-down mount here. What this does is it gets bolted into place on top of one of the roof supports. And it does come complete with a set of screws to do that.

You just screw them to the roof support. It comes with a strap that goes around through and buckles to the bicycle rack and we will go ahead and show you how that looks. Now the relationship of the bracket itself here will vary depending on what type of trailer and how much roof space you have to work with. We are just going to arbitrarily leave it here for now. And basically what is going to happen is your strap will go through this D-ring right here. You can run it through your tie-down hook here, back through the strap, and it has a cam buckle right here, so you can just go ahead and just run it through, and that way you do not have to worry about making a knot or anything like that, and it will stay secure throughout your trip. Just to give you an idea, when you have it properly installed, the strap will be situated just like this here. Next we will go ahead and install a bike on here and show you how basically they fit on there.

Basically, your tires will fit inside the dividers here so they are basically acting like a wheel well. And basically, when you get your bike into place, you go ahead and use your bungee cords and just zip-tie the post to the bike to keep them from going anywhere. Just tie it to the post here anyway you can, enough just to keep it stable. You may want to wrap it around itself. Basically it is just personal preference on this one. The idea is to get it as tight as possible and wrap it around a couple of times and just strap the bike down. I can see this really being great if you are hauling a lot of kids bikes actually. And also, as we have seen before, we have just loaded up the bikes, and when it is on the roof it is going to be up a little higher than you are. So to accommodate that you pull this pin out, and these bars are out of the way. So you put your bikes in and, once you get them stable, you put the bars back and then tighten up your strap to the post here.

All right, as you can see here, we have got two different bikes with two different tire styles. We have got a thin road bike tire and a mountain bike tire. They both fit evenly in the bicycle rack. Basically, the rack itself can hold about 140 pounds worth of bikes. However, you want to go by the capacity of your roof, just to be on the safe side. Drilling is, obviously, required to install the tie-down points for the straps, and some assembly is required. And there you have it for part number S80550 from Swagman.
