Today we are going to install the Foxwing awning from Rhino-Rack, part number RR31200. The first step in installing the Foxwing awning is to attach the brackets to the backside of the awning. To do this, you will need to pull the cover back on the one end and fit the four square headed bolts into the tracks, two on the top and two on the bottom. With the bolts in, we can put the feet on and just loosely fit them over the bolts. With the plastic feet in place, we are going to take our metal hardware bracket and just slip it in. We will do this for both feet. With them metal hardware bracket in place, we are going to go ahead and slip on our flat washers and our nylon locking nuts so we can hold everything together while we maneuver and start tightening things down. Again, we do not need to tighten anything down at this point. Just get everything threaded on there so we can keep all of the parts together. 0:55
This next step of the installation is going to vary depending on what type of crossbar you have. Rhino-Rack offers either the heavy-duty crossbar of the Sports/Aero style crossbar which is what we have on this vehicle today. There is also going to be a supplemental set of instructions if you have the square crossbars or the round crossbars. For those installations, you will need a separate hardware kit. For our style of crossbar, you are going to take the two square head bolts, a washer on them and feed them up through the bottom of the feet. And on the top you are going to place another flat washer and another nylon lock nut. To tighten the hardware involved with the Foxwing awning, you are going to need 13 millimeter and 14 millimeter sockets and wrenches. We are not going to tighten these down all of the way as we need the feet to slide. But, we are going to tighten them up enough to save ourselves some wrenching later, once we get it on top of the roof. For the nylon locking nuts, you are going to need to use the 13 millimeter wrench or socket to tighten them down. 2:01
Since we are using the Sports/Aero style of crossbar, these square headed bolts are going to fit into the track on the top of the crossbar. The base of the foot measures almost 2-1/4 inches. So we are going to cut our rubber stripping back to leave a 2-1/4 inch gap. Back on the roof of the vehicle, we are going to take the crossbar end caps off so that we can get to the rubber strip on top and trim it back. To trim the rubber stripping, you can either use a razor knife or a good, sharp pair of scissors. Once you are finished trimming, just go ahead and push the stripping back into place. Repeat this process for the rear. The Foxwing awning needs a minimum crossbar spread of 31-1/2 inches from the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar. We have set ours up to a 36 inch spread between the crossbars. Now that we have the rubber stripping trimmed, we can go ahead and put the Foxwing awning up on the roof rack. With the awning up on the rack, we are going to go ahead and put our crossbar end caps back in place to keep the awning from sliding out. Once we get the feet tightened down to the crossbar, we want to make sure that we have the awning centered between the crossbars. That way the load is distributed evenly. Once you have the Foxwing awning set, all you have to do now is tighten down the bolts. With all of the bolts tightened down properly, that concludes the installation of the Foxwing awning from Rhino-Rack, part number RR31200.
