Review-rockymounts-tierod-rky1014 Today we are going to review the Rocky Mounts TieRod roof mounted bike carrier, part number RKY1014. This model is silver but its also available in a wide variety of colors so check our website to see whats available. This carrier will mount to the roof rack of your vehicle and youll use the front fork on your bike to mount the bicycle. It will only work with bikes that have quick release front wheels. But the skewer and the rack itself are lockable to help secure your bike rack as well as your bicycle. The aluminum tubular tray is 45 inches long and will fit a wide variety of tire sizes from skinny road tires to 2.7 inch wide mountain bike tires.

The rack is designed to work with crossbar strengths that range from 16 inches to 40 inches and its made here in the USA and covered by a one year limited warranty. The rack is designed to work with round, square, aero and elliptical bars as well as most factory cross bars. Your cross bar spread will need to be 16 inches minimum to a maximum of 40 inches. There are two places where a lock cores can be installed. One is here on the skewer.

When we lock this skewer closed, the bicycle cannot be removed. The second lock position is up here on the rack; what this lock will do is secure the cover to our rack so that it cant be opened up and it cant be removed from the roof of your vehicle. You can purchase the RockyMounts lock cores separately and that is part number RKY0332. The attachment point at the front of the rack is actually very quick and easy to use. There are a pair of steel straps, coated in rubber that will wrap around the cross bar.

To tighten them you will remove the cover and use the included Allen key to tighten this bolt. This is also how you loosen the straps to remove the roof rack from your vehicle. The rear mount uses a steel bend with a rubber pad on it that will wrap around your rear crossbar and youll tighten it with these wind nuts. There are two sets of bolts, we have the longer bolts installed today but there is also the shorter bolt that you can use if you dont need the additional length. Weve got some ticker crossbars on this vehicle, so were going to leave our long bolts on.

The rear tire of your bicycle is going to be secured to the rack with the ratcheting strap. To open the ratcheting strap, were going to push down the clamp, pull it out and you will set your bike into place. Feed this strap through the tire, push it in and pull it to latch it and click into place. Up front you will secure your bicycle via the front fork. You will drop the fork into position on the skewer; turn the handle to lock the skewer on your bicycle. There is a cut out here on the tray that will accommodate bicycles with disc brakes. Now we will go ahead and mount it up onto the vehicle and show you how the system works. Well start by attaching the front mounting point on top of our crossbar. Well pull the rubber straps open and sit the bike rack on top of our crossbar. Well feed the straps around and back into their locking positions. Then we will take some of the slack out using the included Allen ranch by tightening this bolt. We are going to want to leave a little bit of room to play so that we can attach the rear point to our rear crossbar. We will take the rear clamp assembly and feed it around our crossbar. The two bolts will sit on either side of the crossbar and the steel band will sit underneath. We will put our wing nut back into place and tighten down the clamp. You want to make sure that you tighten down the front bolt and the rear bolt evenly so that we get a good seat with our clamp on the bottom of our crossbar and to make our rack sturdy. We will go ahead and tighten these down all the way and then we will move back to the front to finish tightening the steel straps. We will give the rack a quick shake test to make sure its nice and sturdy then we will snap the cover back into place and we will be ready to load our bicycle. Sit the rear wheel in the tray so that you can balance the bike easily and then well drop the fork into the skewer; tighten up the skewer by rotating it clockwise until you get a good snug grab on the front fork.Now we will come back to the rear. You want to make sure that the rear clamp is centered and then feed the strap through and pull it tight. And with that our bike is loaded and were ready to hit the road and test it out.
