Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The double-eye spring is suspended at the ends by hangers that attach to its eye or, in the case of tandem-axle or triple-axle systems, into hangers in the front and rear and an equalizer or equalizers in the center. To determine the type of hangers or hanger kit you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring you have, as well as your axle diameter and capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications.

Please Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension PR626 Review

Today were going to be reviewing number PR626, the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Axles. When ordering a spring there are a few things you do need to know first. This spring measures 26 inches long by 1-3/4 inches wide. You will need to know the springs half-length which is measured from the center of the mounting eye to the center of the spring here at the leaf bolt. This spring has a 13-inch half-length. One final measurement you will need to know is the spring height. To get the spring height youll need to draw an imaginary line from the center of the mounting eye to the center of the mounting eye.

Using that imaginary line youll actually measure from it to the spring surface giving you the spring height. In this case, it is 3 inches.Youll notice that mounting points are two 9/16 holes with nylon bushings in them. These nylon bushings help to prevent metal on metal contact while the spring is mounted on the trailer. And that does it for part number PR626, the 6-Leaf Double-Eyed Spring for 4,500-lb axles. .

I was able to search the website easily and found the part I needed quickly. Etrailer even had a schematic that explained exactly how to measure the part to be sure I was ordering the correct spring. I watched a short video on installation and was ready to go. As usual, it fit perfectly and the installation was easy.42398

The one thing you could have mentioned about the product was the length eye-to-eye. Other than that it was shipped fast and was received in a very timely manner.14896

  • Replacement Springs for a 2004 Coachman Cascade
  • The eye to eye measurement needs to be taken when there is no load on the springs. The trailer needs to be jacked up so that the wheels are not touching and the springs are bearing no load. If they are measuring 26-1/8 with a load on them and they are nearly flat, I would imagine a 25-1/4 inch spring would be too long. Something like part # PR6 would probably be a more appropriate spring, but please measure the spring when you can get the trailer off the axle. If the springs are almost flat,

  • Will the Larger Capacity Leaf Springs # PR4 Fit Tandem Axle Trailer With 3,500 lb Axles
  • If the measurements on your trailer match the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring, part # PR4B or part # PR4, they will bolt up to your trailer. My contact at Redline informed me that the heavier 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring, part # PR4 will work, but it will give you a rougher ride. Also the weakest link on the trailer will be the 3,500 lb axles when using the 4,800 lb leaf springs. It is recommended to use the Leaf Springs For 3,500 lb Axles, part # PR4B for your trailer with 3,500 pound axles. Inst

  • What Is The Proper Hanger Spacing For A 3 Leaf 1,750 lb Capacity Leaf Sping
  • The spacing of leaf springs varies depending on how many axles are on your trailer and the position of the spring. For a 3 leaf, 1,750 lb spring like part # PR3 the hanger specifications in the Redline Trailer Supplies Catalog are as follows: Single axle - 25-3/4 inches Tandem axle - A=29-1/2 - B=29-1/2 Triple axle - A=29-1/2 - B=34 - C=29-1/2 The recommended hanger kit for a single axle trailer is Single Axle Trailer Hanger Kit, part # APS1, or part # APS4. • How to Determine Which Leaf Springs to Order for Tandem Axle Camper with 3,500 Pound Axles
  • When replacing the leaf springs on your camper you will need to match all of the dimensions and the spring capacity as closely as possible to the original spring. Usually the measurement from eye to eye will lengthen and the height measurement will decrease with wear. See picture I have included that will show the measurements you will need to match to replace your leaf springs. • 4,500 lb Leaf Spring Recommendations for a Dual Axle Trailer
  • Generally speaking, the heavier the spring rate the rougher the ride will be when unloaded. That is the sacrifice that gets made when you go to a spring that will allow you to have a higher towing capacity. If you are concerned about ride quality and are positive that the trailer will never see more than 9,000 lbs then leaf springs # PR626 would be a good choice for you. Regardless of the springs you choose, you will be limited by the lowest rated component of your trailer. So if the axles

  • Is there a Specific Torque Rating for Trailer Suspension Bolts
  • If we are talking about shackle bolts that hold the leaf springs to the hangers then they do not have to be super tight if you use a lock nut. You will be looking at about 65 to 95 foot pounds of torque. That is for 9/16 inch bolts. Here is a short chart for common suspension bolt sizes: 1/2 inch Bolts: 45 ft/lbs - 70 ft/lbs 9/16 inch Bolts: 65 ft/lbs - 95 ft/lbs 5/8 inch Bolts: 100 ft/lbs - 120 ft/lbs This comes from our FAQs on slipper springs and double-eye springs which I have linke

  • Replacing Leaf Spring Recommendation for a 2004 Weekend Warrior Super Lite FK 2100
  • Since you have dual axles you will split the overall capacity of your trailer between the two axles. So you would not want a double eye leaf spring set for 8,000 lbs even if we made one because that would be way overkill for your setup. The closest spring sets that we offer would be the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # PR4. This spring has an axle capacity of 4,800 lbs, so when you double that because of your dual axle setup you end up with a capacity of 9,600 lbs which is more than the 8,000 lb ra

  • Should Trailer Suspension be Torqued Down with the Trailer Loaded or Unloaded
  • Since you would be installing the suspension with the trailer unloaded and jacked up, the torque specs are assuming the trailer is not loaded. Technically I suppose it would not matter since the spec is for the hardware and is not taking into account whether or not the trailer is loaded. But it would be a lot easier to do if it was unloaded (more space).

  • How to Fix Shackle Straps that Hang from the Equalizer to Spring and are Pointed Down
  • What you can do is jack up the trailer and then use a long metal bar or piece of wood and pry the spring back up into position. Some times you may also need to jack up under the axle and that might help to pop it back into place. This can happen with no weight on the trailer and if weight is pulling down on it. For example if the trailer was jacked up and the axle was pulling down it can pop it out of position.

  • Torque Rating For Shackle Bolts and Which Way Should a Lock Nut Go On a Bolt
  • For the 9/16 inch diameter bolts a torque rating of 65 to 95 foot pounds is right where you want to be. Lock nuts will only thread on properly one way so it is fairly easy to determine if you have it on correctly when you start to turn it by hand. On a nut like # TRFA916DLNZ there are markings on it as you can see in the picture. Other lock nuts are wider on the end that goes onto the bolt so it is clear on those as well.

The bolt is not driven in, when the shackle bolts are tightened, the knurled portion of the bolt will be drawn into place. Make sure you use a lock nut, and snug it down then back it off about 1/4 turn so the shackles will not bind. If you use a wet shackle bolt with a grease zerk, you will want the zerk facing the outboard side of the trailer for easy access. The movement of the suspension will make it almost impo

You will also need to know the axle capacity which should be listed on a sticker or plate on the trailer frame or tongue. To measure you will first need to take the weight off of the side you are going to measure by jacking up the trailer on that side. Then you will take the measurements indicated in the picture I have included. Based on the measurements and the capacity needed I can determine if there are

If you are replacing the springs and hangers you will need to use the same center to center dimension as the original mounting brackets. These springs are designed for a 4,500 pound axle. When replacing springs on an axle you divide the axle carrying capacity in half to get the spring capacity. This means that you will need at least 3000 pound springs. When you measure your old springs, they will measure longer than the new spring due to wear. Since you have a broken spring you may want to go with the Double-Eye Spring, # PR6. This i
