Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The double-eye spring is suspended at the ends by hangers that attach to its eye or, in the case of tandem-axle or triple-axle systems, into hangers in the front and rear and an equalizer or equalizers in the center. To determine the type of hangers or hanger kit you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring you have, as well as your axle diameter and capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications.

Please Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Trailer Leaf Spring Replacement Demonstration

Video Transcript for Trailer Leaf Spring Replacement Demonstration

Today were going to show you how to install a typical leaf spring onto a trailer. What we have here is a typical 4 leaf spring on a 3500 pound axle. The first step involved is loosening this bolt here and this bolt here on the bottom and this top one we do not have to worry about for now. The next thing we have to do is loosen these U-bolts here. The nuts are on the bottom, so we loosen these out so we can get our axle away from the spring. What were going to do first is take off this bolt and then well come around and do this one. Were going to let this spring down and our axle is going to hang down a little bit. What we did was keep the axle tight on the other side so it will come down some but it will take off most of the weight so that way we can do one at a time.

If the bolt is jammed in there a few wacks on the hardened bolt will be okay but well put the nut back on to protect the threads a little bit more. With the spring away you might as well take a moment to inspect the shackle links here, this is a part that is supposed to wear down over time. What youll see is that this hole will become oval shaped as the weight sits on the trailer. This ones in pretty decent shape so we wont have to change it out, but if you see any hole egg shaped, its probably time to change it out. Now well re-install our spring bolts with a reversed procedure. What you want to do now is leave the outside spring bolts and mount our U-bolts into place. You want to leave this loose so you can have a little wiggle room. Since we have our bolts in place we can start tightening them down, well start with the U-bolts and well tighten them down equally. Basically well do a criss-cross pattern then back and forth. The main object here is to tighten these down equally, one or two threads difference is not going to make that big of a deal, but its what you want to aim for. Torque wise, you want to make sure the plate is bending up slightly, once youve done that then youre tight enough. Now we go back to our spring bolts and tighten those down. Now well repeat for the other side. There you have it, your spring install is complete.

Due to a snapped axle spring on my Outback travel trailer, I replaced all four springs and all shackles, bolts and equalizers. I really like the quality, rapid shipping and the fact everything came exactly as ordered! The only thing I would change is to order the greasable bolts for every pivot point rather than just the equalizer pivot. These higher load rated springs should have been on the camper from the factory! I'm a happy camper now!28058

Spring was better than I expected. The biggest thing that directed me to purchase this spring from this company was all the very positive reviews I read before making my purchase. I also read some of the tech support questions from other customers, one question actually helped me in my selection of the spring I purchased. For sure I will use this company for any future trailer needs.23399

They are leaf springs so there is not much to say about them; however the order was correct, shipped in a timely manner, and the web site offered associate material needed to finish the job. The price was definitely reasonable compared to other company’s offering the same material.11677

Positive Experience I recommend etrailer. the price was better than I'd seen locally or online, although it happens that the size and type I needed was a particularly good deal. The service and shipping were surprisingly prompt, and when the box arrived, everything was as advertised. While replacing four leaf springs is about as much fun as shopping for socks, etrailer at least made ordering a positive experience. I actually found the video helpful as well. I've included a picture of what mine actually looked like. A breaker bar is a very handy tool.5603

  • Choosing Leaf Springs with the Same Weight Capacity and Dimensions But Different Number of Leaves
  • When choosing between the Trailer Leaf Spring, 1750 lbs. 4 Leaf, item # PR4B, and the Trailer Leaf Spring 1750 lbs, 3 Leaf, item # PR3, there is no real reason to choose one over the other. Both of the springs have the same weight capacity and dimensions. It is recommended that springs be replaced in pairs so if replacing a pair on a double axle trailer you would want to choose the same number of leaves that are on the axle that you are not replacing the springs on. Otherwise, if you are repl

  • Quality and Measuring for a Replacement Slipper or Double Eye Spring
  • You could convert your trailer from using slipper springs to double eye springs, but that would include adding a lot of new, and different parts to the trailer. Double eye springs generally have a lower capacity than slipper springs, and they also have more parts to maintain. I recommend staying with slipper springs, and just replacing the few parts that seem to have worn out. To completely replace the slipper springs and all the associated parts, you will need several items. For one axle sus

  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled a 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring, # PR4B, to measure. At the center of the spring where the bolt is, the total width, including the bolt, is 2 inches. The width of just the leaves is 1.30 inches. Each leaf is approximately 0.30 inches thick.

  • Can Trailer Height be Raised by Changing the Suspension
  • If the trailer leaf springs are currently mounted on the bottom of your axle, moving them to the top of the axle will lift the suspension. To do so you will need 4 new spring seats, 8 u-bolts, 16 nuts and 4 U-Bolt plates per axle. The diameter of your trailer axles will determine the size of the parts you will need to order. If the axles are 3 inches in diameter, part # K71-385-00 would be a good choice and would eliminate the need for welding new spring seats to the other side of the traile

  • The trailer will have a plate or sticker on it that will list the VIN number. The weight rating of the axle should be listed on that same plate or sticker.
