Driving Light Installation - 1992 Winnebago

Video Transcript for Driving Light Installation - 1992 Winnebago

Today on this 92 Winnebago, we are going to install the driving lights, part number NV-509W from Pilot Automotive. What we are going to do on this one is actually replace the existing driver lights on the front of the vehicle and replace them with these Navigator driving lights. So what we are going to do first off is strip of these old lights and start removing some of the wiring too. OK, now we will cut off the rest of the wiring that is inside here and we will replace it with the new wiring that came with the lights. This white wire here goes back inside the cab, going back to the old switch. What we are going to do is actually keep this wire intact and we are going to use this wire to pull our new wires back through. So these three wires here are going to go to the switch that we are going to install inside the cab. We will just tap them together and pull them all the way through and get those started. And we will just leave them alone for now. We have our wires pulled through and we are just going to leave these alone for now. Maybe tie them off or something like that, so they dont get pulled back through. 0:53

Lets go back outside and start mounting our lights. This is one of the driving lights themselves and this is all of the brackets that come with it. It is just this built in one right here. And you have a little bit of adjustment with it. Obviously you have the up and down. And the slots here, you can use a set screw so you can tilt it up and down and a little bit of left and right too. And we are going to mount these to the original factory brackets that came down off of the old lights. You can mount it to the bottom of the bumper if you want, but we just left the original brackets there. They are nice and sturdy and wont go anywhere. So all we have to do, basically, is just hold them up to our bracket and just line them up and then start drilling our holes in. We are just using some regular, self-tapping screws,. You can get those from the local hardware store, they didnt come with the kit. Its one of the self-drilling features. We have our up and down and we can twist them either way too. And then, to set this, there is a screw on the side. And its tight and it wont vibrate loose. We are going to go ahead and repeat the process on the other frame bracket for the other light. What we are going to start off doing is, we are going to start hooking up our grounds. Our black wire is going to be ground. So we will just push these two connections together. And we are going to ground it straight off to the frame member right here. And again, we are going to use some self-tapping screws. These hooks are designed to actually go around existing bolts somewhere. And you can use that for a ground too, but if there is not one available, you can just use a set screw going into the frame member. We will go ahead and repeat back on over to the passenger side. And then we will start hooking up our wires, for the power, going to the lights themselves. 2:22

Remember the wires that we ran through the fire wall? This is the white wire that is going to power our lights and they are going to the white wires that are on the lights too. Our red wire is going to be our power supply but we will deal with that later. Our white wire we are going to run behind the grill here and down to our lights. Alright, starting with our light thats furthest out, in this case its going to be the passenger side, we are going to go ahead and put on our connector that will slip onto this terminal right here. First we will twirl the wire, make it a little bit stronger. And then we are going to put the little cover, or jacket, over the wire first. Just go ahead and put a wire inside here. And we are going to crimp this part around the plastic. Once you have that completed, go ahead and slide the cover back over it. And we will hook out two spade terminals together. We will go ahead and run our wires up and safe for now. Then, we will cut off any excess we have. We folded our wire over and we are going to cut right here, at the end. And we will strip our wires back and twirl them together. And take both of them, and we will go ahead and twirl those together. Then we will slip out jacket on. We kind of got lucky here, it actually slipped over both of them. And then we will go ahead and crimp onto the wire themselves. Make sure we have a good connection. And then, we will hook it up to our white wire coming off of the light. 3:36

Now we take our white wire and we go back up to the top and pull up all of our excess. This is our switch for the lights. It is going to mount up to the bottom of the dash, just like this. It has a couple of slots in the top here so you can run some holes through the sheet metal here. And that way, we can adjust it up and down and get a little bit of tilt if we need it. And our wires are going to fit on these prongs right here. And the diagram will show you exactly which way it goes. We will go ahead and cover it here. We are going to temporarily install these wires onto the prongs here because it would probably be easier to install the switch without the wiring hooked up. We will do it now, just to make it clear. The prongs are actually labeled, one, two and three . If you go by the diagram, the one is going to go to ground. That is going to be our black wire. And then two is going to be our white wire. And then number three, of course, is going to be our red wire. And if you notice our black ground wire, right here, we are going to find a place underneath the dash to attach that to also. We will go ahead and disconnect these wires and we will go ahead and attach the switch to the dash itself. 4:34

The reason that we use self-tapping screws to begin with is that they are the same threads as the screws that come with the kit to hold the lights in place. However, these little screws here are what hold the toggle switch in place. It is really hard to kind of find a bit that small. So, honestly, we just went ahead and switched out the screws and they will still fit just fine. And we can still get our screw driver in there. So we will go ahead and attach it to the dash now. Go ahead and hook up our wires and then we will go back outside and hook up to our power supply. Now this bolt right here is actually connected to our power supply. And we are actually going to use that to hook our lights up to. So we are just going to copy the factory here and just hook up to here. But the ring terminal that came with the kit is obviously way too small. So, we are going to outsource this. Again, you can use the little ring terminals from your local hardware store and replace it and then install it. Put our little cover back on. Alright, lets give the lights a test run. Go ahead and turn the switch on. It lights up and we will go check our lights outside. And that pretty much finishes our install. The last thing we need to do is just zip-tie our wires into safe locations and we are good to go. That finishes our install of part number NV-509W from Pilot. 6:03
