This cutaway view of the shank shows the locking mechanism in action. The locking pins extend out from the shank when the key is turned, locking the ball mount into the hitch.
The ball platform locks to the ball mount with an internal lock. When you unlock the platform you can slide it up or down to adjust the ball height. You can also slide the platform off, reverse it, and slide it back on to change ball sizes.
The built-in anti-rattle balls prevent the shank from rattling when the ball mount isn't hooked up to a trailer, preventing movement that could cause noise and wear.

Satisfied Received helpful advice, order was taken efficiently and product arrived as promised. Probably a much nicer mount than I need, but I was 5 hours from my truck, the trailer was being built, and I was not sure how much drop would be needed. This one covers a wide range, is attractive, easy to use, and has a convenient locking feature. May or may not need the smaller ball, but like knowing it's there just in case. And it all looks good pulling a Kubota tractor on a 22' trailer.3683
The Self-Locking pins come out to about flush with the receiver tube, nothing to cut or remove for security purposes. Nothing is completely theft-proof, but this is one of the best systems I have seen.
I have not heard of any in-hitch failures on any of the DiversiTech Self-Locking Ballmounts that we have sold. The pins overlap internally and are made of stainless so they are very strong and corrosion resistant. view full answer...
On the Diversi-Tech Ball Mount, # DTALBM6600, you would need to use the Diversi-Tech 2-1/2 inch to 2 inch Adapter Kit for DTLBM and DTALBM Series Locking Ball mounts, # DTADP35, on your 2008 Chevy Truck. The adapter kit comes with its own lock, so you would have a key that fits the adapter and a key that fits the ball mount. The reducer that came with your truck will not work because the pins on the ball mount will not extend enough into the reducer to attach properly.

I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Self-Locking Adjustable Aluminum Ball Mount, # DTALBM6600. The balls are locked into position whether or not the unit is locked and they cannot be removed easily. They do not simply screw into place. I went out to the warehouse and measured the Self-Locking Adjustable Aluminum Ball Mount, # DTALBM6600, so you would be able to determine if you would be able to mount your Rock Tamers or another mud flap product, like the Roadmaster Roadwing Removable Mud Flaps, # RM-44000. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the shank (just prior to the curved portion) it measures 3-3/16 inches.

The body of the Diversi-Tech Adjustable Ball Mount, # DTALBM6600, is made from aircraft-grade high-strength polished billet aluminum, which is naturally corrosion resistant and would be excellent for salt water marine applications. The integrated hitch pins are made from O-ring-sealed stainless-steel which is also corrosion resistant.
