This cutaway view of the shank shows the locking mechanism in action. The locking pins extend out from the shank when the key is turned, locking the ball mount into the hitch.
The ball platform locks to the ball mount with an internal lock. When you unlock the platform you can slide it up or down to adjust the ball height. You can also slide the platform off, reverse it, and slide it back on to change ball sizes.

This is Diversi-Tech Self-Locking Adjustable Ball Mount, part number DTALBM6425. Like other Diversi-Tech ball mounts, this ball mount is made of aircraft grade billet aluminum. The ball platform features 2 fixed balls, a larger 2-5/16 and a more common 2 inch. This ball mount is designed to be used with 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch trailer hitches. It has a gross trailer weight of up to 10,000 lbs and a tongue weight of up to 1,500 lbs. It can be used in the rise or position, to provide 5 inches of rise or up to 4 inches of and can be adjusted in 1 inch increments. 0:45
To attach our ball platform to our shank, we are going to unlock our securing pin. Remove the cover from the side and use the keys to retract the pin. With the pin retracted we can fit the ball platform over our shank. Once we have it positioned over one of our holes, we can undo the key and the pin will into place, securing the platform to the shank. You will not be able to remove the key until it is securely locked into place. This ball mount also features the self-locking hitch system. Two pins can expand or retract into the ball mount, so that you can remove or install the ball mount in your hitch. This is a great security feature because there is no pin sticking outside of your hitch, for a potential thief to cut and you also do not have to remember a separate pin and clip or hitch lock. Again, you will use the key to retract the pins, so that you can remove it from the hitch and to re-install, simply turn the key in the opposite direction. And that does it for the Diversi-Tech Adjustable Ball Mount, part number DTALBM4625.
