This cutaway view of the shank shows the locking mechanism in action. The locking pins extend out from the shank when the key is turned, locking the ball mount into the hitch.

The ball platform locks to the ball mount with an internal lock. When you unlock the platform you can slide it up or down to adjust the ball height. You can also slide the platform off, reverse it, and slide it back on to change ball sizes.

The built-in anti-rattle balls prevent the shank from rattling when the ball mount isn't hooked up to a trailer, preventing movement that could cause noise and wear.

Between the Self-Locking Adjustable Aluminum Ball Mount, part # DTALBM6400, and the Self-Locking Adjustable Aluminum Ball Mount, part # DTALBM6600, I believe that you would be better off with the # DTALBM6400. As it could do both the 1 inch and 5 inch drop and would not be be excessively longer than you need.
