Excellent winch that seriously exceeded my expectations. I bought it and the DL 4800 lb. strap for a car / farm trailer (welded a custom mount on the front) and just used it to load up a 1946 Willy's CJ-2a by myself. The gear reduction is perfect and I used the lower speed for pulling it up the ramps, the faster speed for the rest. Would be ideal for light vehicles (such as the Willy's) or smaller tractors (Ford 8N, Massey 135, etc.). I had no idea a manual winch could work so well. Awesome product.18281

  • How Do I Select a Hand Winch for My 8,000 pound Boat Trailer
  • Finding the right capacity winch for your boat trailer is fairly simple but you have factors that must be taken into consideration. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, you could increase the ratio to 3 to 1. With wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1. Special consideration should be given to pontoon boats and other boats with special hull designs. By my calculations the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch wi

  • Recommended Winch To Use For a Boat Lift
  • I do have a winch that could be used as a boat lift, but the item you selected, Dutton-Lainson hand winch # DL15440, would not be a good option as it is not a brake winch. A brake winch will stop the load and hold it in place if you were to let go of the handle when winching. For use as a boat lift, I would recommend the Dutton-Lainson brake winch # DL15721. This winch is designed for multipurpose uses including boat lifts. If you will need a larger capacity brake winch, we also offer winch #

  • Is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, # DL15440, Designed for Marine Use With a 2 Inch Winch Strap
  • Yes, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, # DL15440, would be a great winch for a boat trailer, especially a larger boat. The TUFFPLATE Finish makes the winch acceptable for marine use and the two speed gearing will help winch the boat in fast until the majority of the load is applied and then the handle can be moved to the lower gear and will give power to finish winching the boat onto the trailer. The correct strap for this winch is the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook, # D
