A key element of easy hitching, unhitching and safe trailer towing is a strong and efficiently operating coupler system, properly installed on the tongue of the trailer. D-L couplers offer an exclusive Quick-Lock ball clamp assembly that can be adjusted without wrenches. This feature provides a precise fit on the hitch ball while the trigger action release allows fast locking and unlocking. The lock lever is held securely closed by cam action and the safety latch.

• Mountng Hole Width, Center to Center, on Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler DL13800
  
• The mounting holes, center to center, on the sides and the top, are 3 inches. One advantage of a higher capacity coupler is that if you ever need or want to use it with something heavier than your current trailer, you will have it available. But the 3,500 pound capacity is certainly enough for your 2,900 pound capacity trailer.

• Bolt Hole Pattern on Dutton-Lainson Model 970 and 980 Trailer Couplers
  
• We do not carry the model 970 you referred to, but my representative at Dutton-Lainson tells me that although the part # DL13800 (which is their model 980) is a bit longer than the # DL13800, both use the same bolt hole pattern or layout. You should have no problem swapping out the couplers.
