Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.

Before purchasing an electric fan, be sure to determine the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirements for your engine. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.

Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16778 and D16779.

  • The Derale Radiator Fan, # D16908, can be used as a pusher or a puller fan, depending on where it is mounted. The motor is reversible. You could use it on a motorcycle, provided that it fits in the space you have available on the bike. The dimensions of the fan are 8-1/8 inches wide x 8 inches tall x 2-1/4 inches deep. You will also need to make sure the bike has an electrical system capable of supporting the 5.3 amp power draw of the fan. I have included a couple of FAQ articles below that shou

  • Do Electric Radiator Fans Have to be Mounted Directly Against the Radiator, 1982 Chevy Monte Carlo
  • For the best performance, a radiator fan like Derale 12 Inch High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan, # D16925, should be mounted directly against the radiator. If there is a gap, less airflow will go through the radiator and it will not be as efficient. If you do not want to use the included mounting straps, I would find another way to mount it directly against the radiator for ideal performance. I have included a link to our FAQ article on electric fans for reference.

  • Using Derale Electric Fan Part # D16908 for Remotely Mounted Transmission Cooler
  • At 450 CFM (cubic feet per minute) the Straight Blade Electric Fan you mentioned, part # D16908, would provide plenty of airflow for the D13503 Transmission cooler. This has been confirmed with Derale, the manufacturer. If you need a thermostat control for the fan, use part # D16769.

  • Recommendation of Electric Fan for 1988 Ford Ranger With 2.9L Engine
  • When choosing an electric fan for your vehicle you will want to make sure to get a fan that will give you the correct Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) for the size of your engine. The CFM is how much air is being moved through your radiator in one minute. The typical CFM requirement for a 6 cylinder engine is 1,600 to 2,000. If your 1995 Ford Ranger is used for towing you will want additional airflow. It is always recommended to go with the highest rated fan. I am including a link to a FAQ page on
