Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2010 Subaru Impreza

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2010 Subaru Impreza

Today on this 2010 Subaru Impreza, were going to install part number C56111 from Curt. The first step is to go ahead and open up the back hatch so well get to the fasteners and remove the two tail lights. The fasteners are gone. Well go ahead and pull the tail light straight back then well get to the wire harness. Well push down a little tab so we can remove it. Okay, with the drivers side done, well go ahead and repeat the same process on the passengers side.

Sometimes pushing that tab down needs a little help. And now, we can go ahead and start installing the wire harness. First, well take the 4-pole wire and run it down between the bumper cover and now at the bottom. Well also do the same thing with the wire harness with the red wire and T-connector. Well take our T-connector with the yellow wire and plug it into the factory harness.

Well leave that alone for now and pull the wires out towards the bottom. Well take our white wire with the ring terminal and run that to the body for ground. Now, well go ahead and take a second to connect our black wires that comes with a kit. Well get up to the black wire with the yellow butt connector. Well take the black wire and push it through just like what we did with the other two wires.

Now, were going to go ahead and trim off a section, a sheet metal, so we can adhere our module to it. Well take our adhesive and attach it to the module and then to the sheet metal. Well take the other half of the T-connector and run that into the tail light. At this point, we can go ahead and reinstall the tail light. Now, well go ahead and run the 4-pole wire over to the center of the hitch and well also run the other half of the T-connector to the other side, and well leave the black wire alone for now.

Now, well use a piece of wire to help pull up our T-connector back to the other side. Theres just enough wire to run in across the other side so be careful how you route the wire. Now, well snap it into the factory harness and now we can go ahead and just reinstall the other tail light. With those wires secured, well go ahead and continue with the black wire and run that up to the front of the vehicle towards the battery. When we run the wire, well make sure we stay away from any things moving like the suspension components or anything hot like the exhaust. Well run our wire through the engine compartment. Well bring it up along the fire wall and zip tie it off to make sure its secured, and then well go ahead route out towards the battery. When we run it to the battery, well go ahead and take our fuse holder, cut it in half. Well take a butt connector on one side and connect that to the black wire. In the other side, well get the ring terminal where well connect it to the positive side of the battery. Once we have our connection made to the battery, well go ahead and install the fuse into the fuse holder and then were finished with our install. And with that, that will finish it for our install of part number C56111 from Curt on our 2010 Subaru Impreza.

The product is terrific. It worked perfectly right out of the box. The instructions are a bit vague and leave much of the wire routing up to the individual. I found that I needed to extend my ground lug by 24" to get to avoid drilling a hole in the fender. So some creativity was needed to do a neat wiring job, but all in all it was easy and works very well.19777

Very pleased with etrailers.com! Shipping was fast and the product is high qualIty. The harness was easy to install except running the wire to the battery. There are not many good places to run a wire under the car, I ran mine inside. Overall great experience! 40617

Install was pretty easty for the most part. Plug and play with the exception of running the 12V power wire from the battery back. My car had few places to run such a wire but it worked out. Overall it worked very well and I'm very pleased.15326
