Today we are going to show you Part Number 90195 from Tekonsha. This is their P3 trailer brake controller. This is pretty much their top-of-the-line brake controller that is out on the market right now. What you need is, obviously, the brake controller itself, plus the mounting bracket, which is pretty unique. It actually grabs it from the top of the brake controller and snaps into place. And this little bracket here actually gets bolted on to the top here, and then this gets bolted onto your dash. And you can angle the brake controller in whatever direction you need. It also comes with a quick disconnect harness, which plugs into the back of the brake controller, and if you want to take it off when you are not using it, you just disconnect from the harness and tuck this away. And then you do not have it on your dash when you are not needing it.
It comes with an informational DVD and it comes with a few connectors and screws to assemble and install on your dash, and another set of screws. And when you are not using your brake controller and you take it off, it comes with this really nice, handy carrying carrying case to put it in, so you can store it in your glove box or whatnot. And next we will go ahead and apply some power to it and show you how it works. We will show you the operation of this brake controller. It is actually very nice. This is a full-featured brake controller, and what is really unique about this brand is that it has an LED display here instead of a lot of numbers flashing like on the other brake controllers. It actually has a lot of diagnostics to tell you what is going on with your trailer. But the operation remains the same as any brake controller, especially this one.
It has a manual override that activates the trailer brakes. And you just push it over and it shows you on the display in voltage how much you are sending out. And also this comes on when you hit your foot brake, just like any other brake controller. And again, it is inertia activated, so if you are sitting still and you apply the brakes you will get hardly any voltage out. But what happens is that when you do apply your brakes, there is a sensor on the inside that will know how hard you are hitting your brakes and will send current to the trailer brakes in proportion to how hard you are using the brakes in the towing vehicle. Also, this brake controller comes with three boost settings, activated by this button right here. Basically you have Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. And what all these boost settings do is make the brake controller come on instantly. Boost Level One puts out 13 percent of the power instantaneously and then after a second it reverts to the inertia-activated brake controller. So basically what this does is it allows your trailer brakes to work first, and then your truck brakes start working afterward. And also the same thing applies to Boosts Two and Three. Two and Three use up to 25 percent of the available braking power. However, with Two and Three, each higher setting you go to on the brake controller actually reacts faster.
This button here goes through the menus that are available on the brake controller. You hit that button, and you have got different options. You have got Display, the Type of Brakes you are using in this case here on this trailer you have total electric brakes. But on some trailers you have what is called Hydraulic Over Electric, which means basically you have a hydraulic pump mounted on the trailer and the brake controller will turn on that pump to activate the hydraulic brakes on the trailer. And then you have this Help feature, which tells you what all the functions mean in the brake controller, which is pretty nice. You can change the display, you change to different colors, and different contrasts. You can change intensity, depending on how good your eyes are. And what is nice about it is it has a built-in diagnostic feature. So, for instance, if the blue wire coming from the trailer gets interrupted, causing a short, or just gets disconnected for some reason, it will actually tell you. So, we have disconnected the brakes, and it shows you in bright red and tells you what is going on. And if the blue wire rubs against the frame or gets shorted out somehow, it actually tells you that, too. And also, the other warning is that the brake controller will display a power loss. So basically if you have a loss of power going to the brake controller for a short time then it will tell you that it is losing power.
To adjust the gain on the brake controller, aside from the other ones that have a little thumb wheel, it has two buttons on the side that you use for scrolling through the menus. Basically it has a little Down button and that will send the power eventually down to zero, and then the Up button will run the power back up all the way to 12 volts, or basically anywhere in between. And there you have it for Part Number 90105 from Tekonsha, the P3 brake controller.

First, a huge "Thank You" to Janice!!! You are the best, and the main reason I am the proud owner of Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller! (see, I initially had an issue with my standard online payment service and almost canceled my order because of it) So I went old school and picked up the phone, one with a cord and spoke to a human being. Her name is Janice, and she made me feel confident that I could trust her and etrailer. And as a result, 4 days after placing my order with her I received my package. That's incredible. I am very happy and will most certainly do business with etrailer again in the future because of Janice. I don't have any experience with brake controllers. So I can't really comment on how much better or worse this one is to any others. But since I am new to the B/C scene maybe this can be considered an unbiased, non professional review of the Tekonsha P3. My general skill level is "requires supervision around all power tools". But I do have some mechanical ability (snicker). So I will just say, if I could install this thing anyone should be able to do it. Of course I also bought the OEM wiring harness for my vehicle so even I was able to figure out which plug went where. On A scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 3 (I'm somewhat large and getting under the dash wasn't easy or it would be a 1). And as others have said, deciding where to mount it actually took longer. I attached mine to the top of the lower dash cowl and it fits almost tight to the dash but still within the 180 degree limit. This positions the controller at the same height as my knee and puts it within fingertip reach while resting my hand on my knee. I can see the controller perfectly through the steering wheel spokes. I went with the green screen background. it seemed to provide the best view in all lighting conditions. The controller itself works perfectly and the set-up was a breeze. Once installed all the functions worked as described. The real time vehicle diagnostics are a plus. I like being able to monitor my battery voltage to the decimal place if I want to. I'm sort of a techno geek so this is really cool. I set the B/C voltage per the instructions and will only use the boost feature if I am in a hurry or feel the trailer is at max load, but my truck is 8k lbs so you may want to set yours to suit your own conditions. I highly recommend the Tekonsha P3 brake Controller if you want the latest and probably the best controller out there in this price range. I highly recommend the OEM wiring harness if your skills are not pit crew comprable and want the easiest install possible. And, I highly recommend you buy it from etrailer if you want to get it at the best price available (I checked them all) and want the added security you're buying from one of the best online retailers that sells this product. And do yourself a favor, go old school for a change, use the phone and call them, and ask for Janice, although I'm willing to bet everyone there is as nice as her. Rob 12695

This is the controller to get ...period. Inerti controllers have much better braking response than the more basic units. I tow a 6500lb church trailer a few times a month and the Tekonsha P3 makes a seamless connection between the trailer brakes and those of my truck; the brakes work as one. The controller responds to the inertia ...how fast or slow you're braking ...and applies a proportional amount of trailer brakes based on the rate of deceleration. This is a robust unit; the case is cast metal and, miracle of miracles ...IT IS MADE IN THE USA!!!! The display is very useful, easy to read and fully adjustable for brightness and color (you can select a color to match the lighting of your instrument lights). The diagnostic function is a nice feature letting you test/diagnose faults in the wiring. My price included the model-specific connection cable to make this a truly plug-and-play setup. The photo shows the quick detach adapter so you can put the unit away (in the included pouch) when you don't need it; the controller does not have to maintain permanent residence under your dash. It can also be easily swapped to another tow vehicle. You can't go wrong with this controller ...it even comes with an installation DVD. I think this is the best bang-for-the-buck in a brake controller ...and with it's quick disconnect features ...the P3 will be the last and only controller you'll need. 16216

I could not be happier with the product,service and price I received from etrailer. The P3 brake controller arrived on the 2nd day and was literally installed in less than 15 minutes with the 3015-P wiring harness. The P3 proportional controller is superior to the time delayed controller I replaced. I will use etrailer in the future and will recommend them to all my friends. I have towed 2-7 tons behind my truck with this controller and I can't say one bad thing about it. The trailer brakes feel just about perfect everytime, no matter what the weight your towing is. It's easy to use and takes the annoyance out of adjusting a timed brake controller. I know the price seems a little steep, but you get what you pay for. I would recommend this to anyone. 14026

I could not find a brick and mortar dealer for this product in my area even though multiple companies were listed as dealers on the manufacturer's website. I'm one of those guys who reads reviews and wonders if they are just made up. Well this one is legit. This company is by far, one of the best online companies to order from. I will be honest, trailer brake controllers do 1 thing, they stop trailers. However; I have never had one install this easy, and look this good. This one went on a 2004 Ford F-150 I use it on a mowing crew trailer with 2 axle brakes, when I plugged it in the controller told me I had a bad ground on the trailer, and it was right. Fixed the wire and away we went. I just wish my snow plow plug looked as good as the brake controller. Shipping was fast, and I will do business with etrailer again.9251

I have this for my 87 Ford Ranger. Thanks to several upgrades, the truck has ample power to pull around my single axle dump trailer. Unfortunately it's too light to stop it with 4ton of sand. The brake controller is extremely adjustable, easy to read, the boost button takes the annoyance out of pulling an empty, then full, then empty trailer. I'd buy this again, and recommend it to anyone who asks. Worth every penny, absolutely worth the upgrade from the cheaper models. 8190

I purchased this brake controller a few days ago and the order arrived surprisingly fast. This is an excellent brake controller. My other truck has a Prodigy and that is a good product, but I can definitely tell Tekonsha has improved even on that with this next generation 90195. Installation was very easy and set up of the controller was a snap too. If this 53 year old lady can install one of these, anyone can. If you tow anything, you owe it to yourself to use a good controller, and E-Trailer offered this controller for over $100 less than it was going to cost me to have a local business install the same one. Just follow the on line instructions from E-Trailer and the mini DVD that comes with this and its pretty easy to install. If your car isn't pre-wired, the hardest part is finding the cold side of the brake switch. I just looked it up on a wiring diagram in my repair book. I would like the option to purchase a 2nd wiring plug/harness to wire in another vehicle, then I could move the controller from car to car as needed.7537

Thanks etrailer! My brake controller arrived very well packaged on the second day after order. After watching the extreamly detailed video on your website showing the install on my specific truck, I was able to do the install myself in about 15 minutes start to finish. I figure it may take longer for some, but since my 2010 Yukon came pre wired with the trailering package, all of the truck wiring was already installed and was exactly where the video showed. After the lightning fast install, I hooked up the trailer and gave it a go; this thing works as good as I ever expected. I would recommend this product to my best freinds.5679

DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION IS GREAT The diagnostic function is very useful: it allows you to verify that battery voltage, the operation of the trucks brake switch signal into the P3, and both the voltage AND the current to the trailer brakes. These are digital readouts of exact voltage or current. You can see the battery voltage drop when you press the brake pedal, or turn on your lites, so it would actually help detect if your battery was weak. 3150

Works like a Champ I am a newbie when in comes to pulling a travel trailer. The installation on this was easy as I ordered it with the wire harness for my specific vehicle. Excellent product I am very pleased with the controller, I would not have bought any other. However, my only problem is that it does not turn off, even with the key off. If you leave it plugged in, it will drain your battery. It has to be unplugged. Which is fine, I suppose, the mounting bracket allows for easy removal, and comes with a storage pack for the glove box.1817

Just installed today in my 2005 Ford Expedition and it looks great, cant wait to use it. Because I only pull occasional and my wife has short legs she wanted it out of the way so I installed it in the center compartment without any problems. Ford already had a whole cut in the compartment and I used the factory wire from E trailer and the wire that came with the unit to make a longer wire (Only needed about 3 inches) and installed in about 30 minutes with removing the cup holders and running the wire. Best part you dont see the device in day to day driving but when you need it, it is right at your side 31412

Awesome controller. Quick and easy to install using the harness. I had it fully installed and working in ten minutes on my 2009 Dodge Ram. Its was just as easy as hooking up a trailer! Looks great and I love the boost function. You can really feel the trailer slow down on level 3. I like level 1 boost, so I don't get that jerking feeling so much. My only gripe is that I wish the harness was longer, but I can splice in a couple of feet myself a little later to get the controller over to the center console of my truck this spring. 29975

First, the customer support provided by eTrailer workers has been a pleasure! These people are dedicated to working with the customer and I will do more business in the future. The product, Tekonsha P-3 is worth every penny and I give it a full thumbs up (Excellent). Installation is very simple, because not only is the manual provided, but a CD is provided as well. The P-3 is currently being used with a 2 axel cargo trailer carrying a lot of weight and an new RV will be added later. Works great! Use it to tow my 5ver. I like how you can change the colors and brightness to something that's not distracting/overpowering at night and choose what the default display is, as well as check things like battery voltage. The boost and reverse features are also great. Not too much room in today's trucks to mount stuff, so I picked a spot on my '08 Chevy that had room behind the dash and cut away to shape a hole in the lower dash and glued in some rubber tubing I split around the sides and top. Looked pretty clean until I installed the radio.28005

I had never installed a brake controller. The information about the controller was great. It helped me make my decision to purchase this model. I also needed the ecb7 wiring which again the information made sure i had everything needed. Then i watched the installation video a couple times to make sure i had a pretty good knowledge to make the install on my 2000 explorer. An easy controller to use. I found the initial brake bosst feature useful. My truck had the 4 pin blue OEM installed connector under the dash and a 7 pin socket from the factory at teh rear. My total install time was about 5 minutes- took longer to ring out each pin for GP behind the truck. The order servive was good- must of recieved 4 emailf from A CSR on this order. Pretty simple install, other than Chevrolet in it's wisdom, installs wires in my 2007 Suburban, but doesn't hook them up to the fuse box. Went on the net and found a solution pretty easily. Unit was easy to program and works great. Hauled a new trailer 500 miles with no issues. Wish they had an optional mount where you could easily remove unit and just leave a smaller bracket in place without the big plastic clip. I will just unscrew it as I don't pull a trailer too often.26555

I had to build a custom bracket for the controller mount since the X is limited in under dash metal but the install went well. The 7 pin trailer harness is a factory Nissan part (plug and play) , but since the receiver does not have the any mounting brackets, I positioned the 7 pin connector up and out of the way of harm by drilling and flush mounting it in the rear bumper. Thanks for carrying products relevant to your customer's needs and having products that work right. I have attached some pics from the finished install. This is absolutely the best brake controller I have every towed with! For years I have used a Reese controller for my 30 ft travel trailer and smaller utility trailer and have always been beaten to death while trying to fine tune the controller to varying loads and road conditions. With the P3 the braking is smooth and us unnoticeable until it is placed on its highest boost setting. I am very pleased with the ease of installation and simplicity of the controls on the P3. Purchased the Tekonsha P-3 Brake Controller and GM specific wiring harness. Installation super easy, except GM put the plug and play socket up where a 6'3" 2heavy installer can either see the socket or reach, not both at the same time. That took about 15 minutes to get in to and done, the rest of the installation took about 3 minutes. Took the trailer out 2 days later and it worked great.19817

The P-3 is an excellent product. I replaced on old Tekonsha Time delay control. When first connected it showed I had a brake overload. On inspection found wire to rear axle disconnected. Bad news with a 14,000 pound fifth wheel. After 10 minutes under the trailer. I was good to go. Controller works great. Installation was fairly straight forward with the addition of the wiring kit from E-Trailer. It took more time to figure out where to mount the controller and the female plug than I thought. Otherwise, a very nice install and with very good results. 18027
