This was a simple bolt on just like the instruction video said. It hardly took any time at all. I didn't even bother jacking up the car since there is enough ground clearance to put it on with the car sitting on the ground.37306

I have mostly good things to say about the hitch and the installation. The hitch was easy to install, and the etrailer installation video helped out tremendously. The only issue I had was with the packaging. When the hitch arrived, the hitch had poked through the box and the paint was chipped from being banged around. The hitch was put pretty loosely in the box. I would recommend that etrailer put an additional cardboard piece on the inside of the box to prevent the contents from moving inside the box.76384

Also, though it does hang down a bit more than OEM (which is class I) I doubt it'll make any difference from a ground clearance standpoint. Installation of the hitch and wiring went exactly as shown on the videos. However, I am finding that there is an excessive amount of play in the ball mount/receiver interface resulting in a rather significant amount of noisy rattling while pulling a trailer.64985

It is normal to have play between the ballmount and receiver. Some times there can be more than others as tolerances permit. Though not a safety risk the noise can be irritating. Check out some of the anti rattle devices available.

Used with a bike rack on a 2007 outback wagon. I haven't towed anything yet (don't really plan to). Wasn't too hard to put on. Video was very helpful. Kept going back to look at the video. Took about one hour by my self, no lift, all wheels on the ground. The hardest part was getting the forward most muffler hanger off with no room to move under the car. Two people would help when installing the bolt on the tow ring. I had to use blocks of wood to support the back of the hitch while hand tightening the tow ring nut. The bottom of the hitch is about 10.5" off the ground (not the lowest point on the car) so technically it doesn't lower the ground clearance. May take a few degrees of the departure angle though.57311

Following the previous reviews I bought this hitch for my 2005 outback. It was exactly as described and the install went very well especially with the available install videos. Probably took about an hour total at a relaxed pace using jack stands in my garage. Everything fit perfectly as if it were OEM design. This was my first etrailer purchase and all I can say is WOW. Printed instructions were fair. I should have watched the video first, would have made the install much easier. Bolt holes lined up without any issues and was able to get the hitch installed in about an hour. Welds look clean and neat and finish was received in great shape. Was able to install the wiring harness in about 10 minutes. Overall I am very satisfied and looking forward to using the hitch.50911

Got my hitch package and installed this hitch on my 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon the same day. Easy install after watching video. Took me 2.5 hours but I am not a mechanic and I didn't have the benefit of a jack or lift (just used the slope of the curb cut for my driveway). I do not recommend installing this way, of course. Get a jack and jack stands or ramp, at least. Also remember that WD-40 (or some other short-term "lubricant") is your friend when unmounting and remounting the exhaust. WD-40's lubricating ability disappeared during install so I had to spray all 5 exhaust hangers both at unmount and again at remount. Anyway, I haven't towed anything with it yet but hope to soon.46799

I must say that the primary reason I bought this hitch from etrailer was the installation videos on their website. To me it said that they actually care about what they are doing, and they care that the customer knows what needs to be done beforehand, instead of being surprised when reading the installation instructions. I will say that the installation times are probably going to be a bit longer than listed if you have to crawl around on the ground under the vehicle (like I did). I can manage some mechanical tasks, but I'm not as proficient at it as most people. Yet I ordered this hitch and self-installed it in about 30-40 minutes on our 06 Outback. Found the install video to be "right on" except that I needed to drop both of my mufflers to get the hitch into position (2005 Subaru Outback LL Bean Edition 3.0). Installation was as quick as described. However, there was some amount of work to remove the mud guards in order to drop the muffler system. Removal took some work since 3 different fasteners were used. I was working at home alone using a set of ramps to access the rear of the car, and it took some work to: 1. lift the hitch assembly into place. Hint, lift one side and loosely fit a bolt, then do the other side. and 2. lifting the muffler system into place required a set of straps attached to the roof rack and progressively raising each side. Maybe a younger person would find it easier, but it is either a two person job, or it requires some thought and experiment.31601

2009 outback xt wagon. As noted above, service and shipping were top notch. Rack and wiring harness look great. Install was very doable, but I did have a few issues. Tips - don't be shy about using a bunch of wd-40 on the rubber muffler mounts. This made removal and re-installation much easier. Definitely needed to remove the most-forward muffler mount to get enough room to install rack. A stuck/stubborn frame bolt was only removed after a good wd-40 soaking and a cheater bar on the socket wrench. After 30 minutes working on the re-installation of 1 of the muffler mounts, I finally took a Sawzall to the metal portion and shortened it to get the rubber to fit back on. The remaining mounts went back on in a matter of seconds. The wiring harness connection was tucked way, way under on the driver's side in the area shown in the video. I really had to dig to find it, and really work to get the tape loose that Subaru had used. 25713

Easy install on my 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5i. Ended up using one of the provided spacers on each side in the frontmost bolts. Unhooked the exhaust at the mufflers and the one under the back seat where the exhaust pipe leaves the cat. Didn't even need to lift the car for access, however it took a bit of trial and error to position the hitch around the mufflers. Overall about 40 minutes from start to finish.21704

Installing the hitch it self was super easy. That install was 5 stars, however, the exhaust hangers are impossible to get off and impossible to get back on. Probably spent 30 minutes removing them and 15 minutes installing the hitch and another hour to get them back. I had to use a crowbar and a jack to get the exhaust lined up for the hangers 20088

As others have said, muffler hangers are a pain. Apply lots of silicon spray or WD-40. Even with the four hangers removed you may have to use a U-Joint and extensions. You could remove the fifth "upstream" hanger as well to get more room, but it's far under the car and hard to get to. The receiver is easy to install once all thats taken care of and it works as described. I mounted mine up with a Thule T2 and it works nicely.10220

2007 Subaru Outback Wagon I included some shots of the hitch from the rear showing the fit and clearance, which is good. It is recessed about 2 inches back from the bumper face. I would rather have it raised another inch closer to the bumper, but I am satisfied with it as is. It looks great and works great. Good experience all around. Dissappointed w/ ballmount fit Installed hitch yesterday and found installation was as documented (I recommend an extra pair of hands though). The hitch fit well and the quality seemed top notch until I inserted a ballmount. I am now disappointed with the hitch because ballmounts fit so loosely (I have tried two ballmounts). Even the Hidden Hitch logo rubber hitch cover fits loosely, so loosely that I expect it will fall out during routine driving. I don't look forward to towing my trailer knowing how badly the ballmount will be banging around inside the receiver. Hopefully I will be able to fabricate some shims to alleviate the problem. 1890

Great Price Instructions were unclear for use of shims or not? I used 1 set towards the back of the car. Also, I loosen the exhaust bolts and dropped one bolt out to swivel the mufflers off to give myself more room since i didn't have extension or universal joint sockets. It took me 1 hour start to finished. To loosen the muffler rubber donuts, remove the donuts from the side that has a "pennis" like shape using wd-40. Don't try to pull hte donuts off on the smooth side of the metal hangers. more work... I am about to mount my motorcycle carrier to my 2008 Outback Xt and transport my 2005 Yamaha Zuma around.1249

Reasonably priced and sturdy. Manufacturer didn't take the time to clean of the weld spray on the outside and didn't deburr the inside of receiver before painting. Had to file around opening to slide in ball mount. So much for the Hidden Hitch Rust Resistant coating. Also didn't realize the receiver was open through the back, so much for the Rubber Trailer Hitch Receiver Tube Cover that I bought, nothing keeps the dirt and gravel from coming in the back.535
