Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The Drums were loose in the box and damaged the seals as the drums were free to move around while being shipped. Not a good packaging job.I should of checked the seals for damage before I got my mobile RV mechanic out to do the work but the bearings and seals were all wrapped up to the ends of the drums and I assumed incorrectly that they were ok. I had to run out to the nearest parts store and luckily they had seals that fit but they only came with a new set of bearings $XX. Also no washer or shim was provided with this kit so had to get that as well. The drums and bearings were fine as were the brakes.
Lesson learned to always check all your parts beforehand.

I am sorry that you needed to make an extra trip to replace the damaged bearings and missing hardware. I will have Customer Service reach out to you about the order.

by:

The brake drums rubbed on the kind of backing plates on my trailer. I think my axles was an older stable. I was able to modify them to make things work though. They worked great and have made several trips with my brake system working great!

by:

These are to replace old 7 1/4" brakes on an older pop up camper frame that I built a small camper on. Looks they will work perfectly with the new Dexter 7" brake assembles I have.

by:

Very well detailed order recap. I like how the videos and parts details are shown with the current order. Well done.

I hate to see that parts arrived damaged out of the hub assembly. I will have out customer service team reach out.

by:

A year ago I bought these as part of an overhaul for a 1976 coleman pop-up camper. Many parts on it were obsolete, so I had to change the drums along with the entire suspension. I am pleased to say they work great with my electronic brakes! We've taken our refurbished trailer on 2 long-distance trips (including one into the mountains) and the brakes and drums perform very well!

by:

Everything in one package taped to the hub. I would have offered more protection for shipping to the bearing and seal then just taping it to the hub but it did arrive unscathed. Quality seemed good. Went together easy. Lost the first dust cap on my first trip around the block for a brake adjustment test. Lost the second on the second trip (about 10 miles). I ordered replacement dust caps and the tap on tool. Not sure if I didn't have them on well enough or if there is a product problem there. I have done a lot of these and never had a problem before.

by:

First of all, the product description on the eTrailer website was very detailed and very complete. With all the different axle sizes and types out there, it was nice to have the specs to make sure I was ordering the right part.

I like the shipping tracker. It's easy to use, and I knew where the shipment was, and when to expect delivery. That was nice, because my hub arrived a day later than I thought it would. (When you order on Good Friday, on Easter weekend, 3 day shipping might take an extra day. I should have expected that.)

I thought that rebuilding the existing hubs would be a good idea. And it was. But while driving the new bearing race into place, I let the race get crooked, and I cracked the hub.

The old hub uses bolts to mount the wheel. The new hub has studs and lug nuts, which makes tire changing much easier. The new hub comes with the race pre-installed, just have to apply grease and tap in the rear seal. very easy.

All things concidered, I'm very happy with the entire process, and will probably order a roof rack for my pop up camper from etrailer in the near future.

by:

I had to replace one hub on my pop-up camper and decided I should do both wheels. The parts I ordered came very quickly (3 days), without having to pay extra for quick shipping. The parts matched perfectly and the job went very smoothly. My only complaint is that one of the hub covers/grease seals was dented and bent. It looks like it was damaged during shipment as it was not packaged separately but instead was taped to the outside of the hub. Luckily one of my old seals was reusable and everything worked out.

by:

The first 2 drum and hub combos i got were machined crooked and the second set had to be turned on a drum lathe before the brakes would work properly. I lost time and money being broke down and paying to have the drums checked and turned at a machine shop. Maybe made in China? The people at e trailer were helpfull and prompt no complaints there, just the quality of product.

by:

I received my parts, packed the bearings, installed the brakes and backing plates assemblies. installed the drum and hubs, adjusted the brakes and on the road we go. It took 1 hour to do both sides and they fit perfect. Thanks etrailer.com

by:

The hubs are great, easy install and perfect fit. Can't wait to try out them and the new electric brakes I installed.

by:

Not sure if these hubs are going to work. Spent a hour today installing and found small size differences between old and new ones. I thought kit was supposed to include everything, but it was missing cotter pins and bearing washers. This was not my first purchase from etrailer, but I could of used more information on hub dimensions. I was replacing surge brake hubs for a 1992 Jayco popup. I would suggest adding links to mechanical drawings with guidance on what and where to measure to get the best product.

DID THE JOB FOR OUR TRAILER-

by:

Electric Brake kit for trailer this time.
The parts are very acceptable and the service is supreme.
Couldn't get any better service anywhere. I've bought a lot of items from etrailer for a couple years now. I have had great experiences with each and every order.

by:

Ordered 4 parts as part of an update to my tandem axle trailer. The correct lip seal is included with 3 and one has the wrong lip seal(too wide and wrong ID). Compatibility information with other parts ordered (brake assemblies in this order) is valuable.

by:

Exactly what I needed for conversion from hydraulic to electric brake system on 1994 Jayco King pop-up camper.

by:

Fit my 1997 Starcraft Starflyer 1021 popup camper. Only problem was that it came with the wrong bearings (came with L44643 instead of L44649). Had to call and now I have to wait another week to do the job.

by:

Seal is bent a bit. I can still use it.

by:

We received our order in record time. The representative was most helpful, and we received the item that we needed.

by:

corect part, good quality.

by:

all parts were there, and works OK.

  • Replacement Brake Drum for a 1998 StarCraft 2408 Pop Up Trailer
When trying to find the correct drum brakes, a measurement of the inside drum diameter and the depth of the drum will be needed. See attached picture. The drum that you referenced, # 8-173-16UC3, measures 7 inches in diameter and 1-3/4 inches deep. Also this drum will have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. If your drum has this measurement and your current shoes measures 1-1/4 inches wide, then this will be the correct part and work it well for your pop up camper. I have also attached an article...

The, HD700ACU3, Complete hub and drum assembly is the part you would need for a direct replacement.

We do offer just the 7-inch hub and drum without bearings, seals, and races for hydraulic brakes but we do not sell the hub and drum for electric brakes without those components. This assembly does have a 4 on 4-inch bolt pattern.

That picture of your wheel is pretty crazy! I hope the damage was minimal and no one got hurt! If you damaged a bearing there's a pretty good chance you also damaged the spindle it rides on. You'd need to inspect the spindle to make sure it's free of damage. If it's damaged it's probably a good idea to just replace the axle since you are already at the point of replacing most of the axle. Especially if the hubs are currently pretty rusty on both sides most likely. You are going to need...
