Highland Sportwing 2 Bike Hitch Rack Review

Video Transcript for Highland Sportwing 2 Bike Hitch Rack Review

Today we are going to show you part number 5801200 from Highland. This is their Sportwing two-bike rack. This will fit 1-1/4 and 2- inch receiver hitches. We will go ahead and install this in a 2-inch receiver hitch and show you how it works. It is pretty simple. It does use two pieces of metal as a bushing to install in 2-inch receiver hitches. If you use 1-1/4 inch, you do not need the bushings. Again, we will show you how it goes together. We will use these two pieces here, that is going to be like a bushing, for a 2-inch receiver hitch. Basically, you just line them up together, like so. And you can orient these either way, depending on the depth of your hitch. So it is not a hard and fast rule to have them a certain orientation. And basically, you just line them up as best you can. Kind of grab them by the edge here, and then you can just go ahead and install it in the hitch. Put our pieces together, grab the ends, and install it in your hitch. And it is going to be loose for now. Install your anti-sway bolt. Take your flat washer and your lock nut - and it is a nylon lock nut - and just go ahead and tighten it down. The bicycle rack does come with the tool for the Allen head but you do need a separate wrench for the nut itself. And we use a 16-mm wrench on this nut. All right, and essentially what this does is that the bolt pulls the whole assembly to one side of the hitch and locks it into place so it cannot move.

Next we will assemble the arms. These just have a pin and clip to hold them in place, because they are designed to be taken off - for instance, if you need easy access to the back of your vehicle. And while we are still at the base here, I will show you that the base itself is steel construction with powder coat finish. But the arms themselves are aluminum material to help save on weight. Next we will show you the cradles here. This is just steel rod material, and it is covered in a generous amount of foam material so you do not have to worry about scratching up the rims on your bike. In fact, that is how the bike is actually held onto this bicycle rack. The rim actually sits in the cradles as aside from the pieces of frame holding it in place. And also, on this piece of padding here, it keeps the frame of the bike from bouncing off the side of the rack and getting scratched up. And this strap right here goes over your tire and snaps into place onto the cradle itself. And these cradles also are adjustable up and down. Obviously, the pad slides and you have this handle here where you can adjust it up and down to suit the width of your bike.

All right, we will go ahead and install a bike and show you how it looks. And you can see, it does sit on the rim. And take your strap, and it goes right over the tires. And that covers our review of part number 5801200 from Highland, their Sportwing two-bike rack.

  • Recommendation of Bike Rack for Comfort bike and Hitch for a 2006 Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • The hitch you selected, Hidden Hitch Class I Trailer Hitch, item # 60201, is an excellent choice for your vehicle. This hitch, and all others recommended for your Mazda 3, is a Class 1 hitch and bike racks that are designed for a Class 2 hitch will not fit in the Class 1 hitch (see link). The two bike racks you mentioned will fit Class 2 hitches only. Be sure when you do select a bike rack that it will fit in a Class 1 hitch. • Will the Highland Sportwing Bike Rack Carry a Tandem Bicycle
  • You will need to measure the wheel base of your tandem bike. Measure from the highest point on one tire to the highest point on the other tire. With this measurement you should be able to determine if one of the following racks will work with your tandem bike. The Highland SportWing 2 Bike Rack, item # 5801200, connects to the bike wheels and the arms can be adjusted up to 46 inches apart for installation of the bikes. This rack has a 100 pound maximum weight capacity. The Swagman XTC2, i

  • Availability of a Bike Rack with 100 Pound Weight Capacity for Bikes with 68 inch Wheel Base
  • Your bikes 68 inch wheel base and frame design does not allow for a hitch mounted option. The overall width and wheel base of the bike is too long for any of the wheel mounted carriers available. There are roof rack options available for long wheel base bikes though. For a roof carrier that carries the bike with the front wheel removed you can use the Thule Tandem Roof Mounted Bike Rack - Pivoting Design - Fork Mount - for Tandem/Recumbent Bikes, item # Th558P, along with the Thule Wheel-On Roof

  • Can I Load Just 1 Bike on the Non-Vehicle Side of the SportWing 2 Bike Rack on a 2010 Honda Civic
  • I do not see why not. You can load your bike onto the location that is easiest for you as long as you do not exceed the capacity of the rack (100 pounds) or the hitch on your 2010 Honda Civic (200 pounds). Normally, it is always recommended that the bike be loaded on the location closest to the vehicle. But I spoke with my contact at Highland, the manufacturer, and they said that you could place just 1 bike in either position though the spot closest to the vehicle is recommended. I have incl

  • Class I Draw-Tite Hitch Part # 24807 and Sportwing Bike Rack Part # 5801200 for 2010 Subaru Forester
  • The Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24807 would be a good choice for the 2010 Subaru Forester. The Highland Sportwing, part # 5801200 would work just fine with that hitch/vehicle combination. The hitch you are interested in has a 200 lb tongue weight capacity, which means that the rack and the bikes placed upon it cannot weigh more than 200 lbs. The rack itself has a 100 lb capacity. In addition to the rack, I would also recommend a Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock with Integrated Cable, part

  • Will the Highland SportWing 2 Bike Rack, # 5801200, Fit on a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
  • In order to see if the Highland SportWing 2 Bike Rack, # 5801200, will fit without removing the spare tire on your 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, there is one important measurement you will need to make. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole back to the furthest point on the spare tire. You can do this easily by placing something like a yard stick against the spare tire and then measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the yard stick. If this measurement is 15-1/2 inc

  • Recommendation for a 2 Bike Rack with More than 15 Inches of Clearance for a 2002 Jeep Liberty
  • The actual Highland SportWing 2 Bike Rack, # 5801200, will clear the spare tire on your 2002 Jeep Liberty by 1/2 inch if the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the spare tire is 15 inches. But, with a bike on it, the bike will most likely make contact with the spare tire. To get the most accurate measurement, place something flat against the spare tire that will reach the ground, like a yardstick. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the yardstick t

  • Recommended Bike Racks for Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • Highland, the manufacturer of the Sportwing 2 Bike Rack specifically mentions that the rack is not to be used on a towed trailer. The primary reason for this is that a rack installed on a towed trailer will experience much more shaking and jarring than it would if installed on a vehicle. The rack is not designed to safely withstand that kind of punishment. We do however offer many different bike racks that are designed for use on the rear of a towed trailer, I will provide you a link to our s

  • Recommendation for Locking Bikes to Highland Sportwing Bike Rack and the Rack to a Trailer Hitch
  • In order to secure and lock the bikes and Highland SportWing bike rack, # 5801200 to a trailer hitch, you can use Hitch Lock with integrated Cable, # 1470DAT. You would loop the cable through the bikes, connect to the hitch pin, and then lock it. When the bikes are of the rack, you can remove the cable, stow it in the vehicle, and keep the lock on the hitch to prevent theft of the bike rack. I have included a link to a video review of this lock for you to view.

  • In order to determine if this Highland SportWing Bike Rack # 5801200 will work on your 2009 Toyota RAV4 you will need to take a measurement. The measurement you need to make is from the center of the hitch pin hole of the hitch that is on your vehicle out to the furthest point of the spare tire of your vehicle. This will tell you how much clearance you would need to clear the spare tire with your rack and bike. As you know there is a distance of 15-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin

  • The issue is, a Class I trailer hitch has a stop in it that prevents Class II accessories from being installed. This is a safety feature so that people do not accidentally overload their Class I trailer hitches. A similar bike rack that is designed for Class I trailer hitches is the Highland SportWing 2, # 5801200. It has the same basic design, shape, and grips the bikes at the wheels.
