Curt Wiring - 56200

Curt PWM Converter Modules

  • For use with Pulse Width Modulation Systems (PWM)
  • Virtually eliminates draw on the vehicles taillight circuit
  • Maximize trailer light brightness
  • No HD flasher required
  • Module gets the signal from the vehicle wiring system, but powers the lights on the trailer directly from the vehicle battery
    • A separate wire must be run to the vehicle battery (55151; sold separately)

PWM wiring systems vary signal intensity over one wire to initiate more than one lighting function. ST systems have one wire that contains both stop and tail functions; a separate wire on each side contains the turn signal functions.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2007 Mini Cooper S Series

Today on this 2007 Mini Cooper we are going to install part number 56200 from Curt. The first thing you need to do is get inside the vehicle and take out the interior panels so that you can get to the wiring behind the taillights. And then we are going to take this mat out. And we are probably going to have to take this threshold off. Alright, we will start by taking out these rivets that hold the plastic threshold in place. We will go ahead and take out all of these plastic rivets, all the way around. That should give us access to the panel. Disconnect the wiring from the light here. And for our 12 volt power supply, we will get that ring off. There you go. Alright, we have the driver side down, now we will go ahead and take out the passenger side and do the same thing. 1:21

Alright, we have access to our wiring harness now. Now what we did is we felt back to the taillight assembly itself and looked for the wires that actually went into it and followed them back out. And we have this assembly right here. And basically what we are going to do is start off and figure out which wires do what. We are going to start off with the running light circuit and we will test the wires until we get our running light beep. That tells us that that is our running light lead. With this special set up, we have low voltage for the running lights and then we will test for the brakes and it gets brighter. So what we will do with that is hook up our red wire with the brown stripe to the yellow and black wire on our vehicle. And all it does is it snaps over one wire and then the other wire hooks in right next to it. And that metal piece in the middle actually cuts through the plastic and makes the connection between the two. Squeeze with a pair of pliers and that is it. 2:22

Alright the next thing that we are going to look for is the left turn signal. And that is going to be blue with the brown stripe. So, we will hook that up with our yellow wire on our PW Module. Alright, we are going to take our ground and attach it to where the two layers of steel are tack welded together so it gives us plenty of material to drill into. We are going to take our green wire and go over to the passenger side of the vehicle and hook up to our light turn signal. Basically what we will do is we will just go ahead and follow the factory harness all of the way up and around. Again, we will look for our taillight wiring. So we will feel for the taillight itself and then we will follow the wiring back out. And we will check our harness right here. Now we will go ahead and turn on our right turn signal and look for that. Alright, it looks like the right turn signal is blue with the red stripe. So we will hook up our green wire to that. And next we will go ahead and take our adhesive, put it to the back of our PW Module and then we will just basically adhere it to the sheet metal right here. We will tuck our wires back in and we will leave out the black wire and also our 4-pole flat. 3:33

Alright, with that accomplished, we will set that aside for now. Now we will go ahead and run our power wire up to the battery. And to do that we are going to use part number 118151 from Draw-Tite. To run our power wire from the inside out, we are going to come over to this grommet right here. We are going to drill through that. Alright, we will go ahead and stripe our wire back. We will go ahead and crimp it to the black wire and then we are going to follow the factory harness, like we did with the green wire, and then go underneath the vehicle and then back up to the battery. Okay, we are just going to take our wire and start of by putting it through the grommet. And then we will go ahead and start reassembling the interior. After going through the grommet, we went above the suspension cross member here. And we went over the gas tank and then came back down the other side. We just followed this line all of the way up front. And we pushed our wire up into the engine compartment and then we will go ahead and pull our wire up from the backside. Keep it along the firewall, as close as possible. And we will just use this part of wire harness here and we will just zip tie to that. 4:53

And then we will go ahead and drill a hole through this plastic right here to the battery, right next door. And do not put a lot of strength into that. Alright, to this we will hook up our fuse holder and a ring terminal and a butt connector and we will connect it to our battery. Okay, we will go ahead and make our connection to the battery. First off, we want to disconnect the battery from the vehicle so we will undo the ground terminal first. And then we will make our connection to the positive terminal. And then we will go ahead and install our fuse, the 10 amp fuse that comes with the kit. And then we will go ahead and reinstall our ground. Alright, with that complete all we need to do now is go ahead and take a light tester and we will check our wire harness. And there you have it for part number 56200 from Curt.

Installed on a 2010 Mini Cooper S Convertible. Ran power to the 12V outlet in the trunk to make installation easier and quicker. Ran trailer connector under rear threshold to the center where the brake light cable is. Trailer connector cable can be easily pulled out when needed. Works just the way I had hoped.10497

I purchased one of these adapters on January 20, 2010. After 18 months, it has failed and the one year warranty is expired. This evening, we returned to the car and trailer in a parking lot to discover that the trailer's marker lights were unexpectedly on. The wiring adapter was slightly warm, and when I pressed on it in one particular location, the lights turned off. When I released the pressure, they came back on. Probably just a bad connection inside, but it's not serviceable so it really doesn't matter. I ordered the "heavy duty" adapter to replace it. We will see how it does.17256

I have had two separate experiences purchasing items from etrailer.com which each involved their technical staff. I will contact them first whenever I need something they sell. They are an outstanding outfit. Experience 1: Trailer Hitch & Wiring Harness VEHICLE: 2010 VW CC 4 cylinder PRODUCT PURCHASED: Valley Hitch and Curt 56200 trailer wiring harness ISSUE EXPERIENCED: Dash "bulb light" out RESOLUTION: The technical staff of etrailer.com investigated the application to confirm it was correct. Then, they researched the experience of others and learned that it is common for VW CC's to have their tail lights fail at the time of the install. I was skeptical this could be but I followed their instructions to buy and install two new bulbs. Bingo, the error was gone and the product works flawlessly. etrailer resources were responsive, communicated with clarity even in response to my skeptical queries. Experience 2: tire chains I had a prior experience with etrailer when I had to buy tire chains for the same vehicle. They provided exceptional service by researching my questions and making specific recommendations which I followed. The result was the best possible. I have not worked with a better on-line shop. I strongly recommend them. Based on my experience, anyone purchasing from them can expect exceptional support and service. Bob B.8876

Good Product... It Works! Just finished installation and testing on my 2010 VW Golf TDI. Installation is as easy as it can be. Providing constant battery power to the rear of the car was the hardest part, but it is unavoidable when the car was designed to use PWM. I added a 5-flat connector between the car and the adapter so it can be completely disconnected from the car battery and lighting system when not needed. Perhaps overkill, but I prefer abundant caution. I haven't had it long enough to comment about reliability, but the form won't let me leave it blank.2681

  • Does the Power Wire in Curt Trailer Wiring Harness # 56200 Have to be Connected to the Battery
  • The Curt PWM Powered Converter, # 56200, should only be connected to the positive battery terminal using Installation Kit, # 55151.
