Video Transcript for Surco Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the 20x48 Surco Cargo Carrier. This is designed for use in Class 1 or Class 2 hitches so it's got the 1 shank. It offers a 300 pound weight capacity. It's part number is 52017. This basket style cargo carrier is going to allow us to get extra gear out of the car onto the carrier to free up some room inside for passengers are pets. It also helps to keep the wet and muddy items out of your vehicle and let that drain out through the mesh floor. The carriers very easy to assemble.

It comes in three pieces and requires just three bolts in the shank and one bolt here on each side in the middle to put it together. It's made of a sturdy steel construction that has a powder coat finish that's going to help resist corrosion. The 5 1/2 inch raised rails that go all the way around the edge are going to help keep your cargo in place as well as offering us very good tie-down connection points. Now that we've gone over some of the key features of our carrier let me show you how to install it on your vehicle. To begin well slide the shank of the carrier right into the receiver tube of our hitch. Well slide it in far enough to where we line up our pinholes.

With those in line were going to take a standard pin for 1 hitches. This part number is PC2. You can check it out on our website. Were going to slide that through and secure it here on the other side using our clip.As you can see the carriers going to have a very nice mesh floor that's very easy to clean. Your dirt and debris is not going to rest on top of it.

You can just simply hose it off right through the bottom. The carrier is made completely in the United States, and there's also an optional light kit thats available for it, just in case your cargo comes up and covers up your taillights. It simply mounts on the back here. That part number is 52014 and it is sold separately. Now were going to load up some gear and show you what this thing looks like in action out on our test course. Well start by going through the shalom which will give you a really good look at the side to side action maybe while you're turning or doing some basic manoeuvres.

Well then head over to the alternating bumps so you can see the twisting motion of the rack as if you we're hitting a curve or maybe a pothole. Then well go into the regular speed bumps where we can see that up and down action. Thats going to complete todays look at the Surco 20x48 Cargo Carrier, part number 52017. .

Ez to assemble. Seems sturdy and not bad looking. Came as scheduled and was packed well. Not sure if this part or the hitch I bought to carry it was at fault but the hitch pin will not fit thru. Holes do not match. Been a card-carrying mechanic since 1978, I get it. These two parts didn't fit together. Had to go buy other bolt to use as "hitch pin". Don't have time for that. 218398

The cargo carrier arrived amazingly quick! Thankfully, it was packed in a sturdy box, very well padded but not at all overly packaged. It arrived in perfect condition. The instructions were simple and clear, and we put it together in about 15 minutes. We do not have a hitch pin yet so are unable to attach it to the car, but we plan to use it on our trips to Utah from California for items like the cooler and other such things that don't need to ride in the car's interior. I'll write an update after our next trip, which is in a few weeks. Thanks for the great product and excellent service. 247712

Very fast shipping. Sturdy and well built carrier. The walls are nice and high to prevent cargo slipping. Adds a lot of cargo room to my Mazda 5 that has very little trunk space. 208366

The cargo carrier was received with no damage to the package. The contents were packaged well and the carrier was in perfect condition upon arrival. I liked that you use nylocks instead of a lock washer and nut for the bolts. It took less than 10 minutes to assemble it and put it on my car. It's only rated as Class 1 carrier but that's all my car is rated to use. I'm more than pleased with the product and will not hesitate to purchase anything I may need in the future from your fine company. Your website was easy to navigate and made my shopping experience a delight. 42549

Everything was great about this experience. First off, eTrailer.com helped me research which products would work with my 1 - 1/4 " trailer hitch on my 2010 Subaru Outback. Once I made the purchase, the carrier was shipped to me very quickly. I used the product to haul a lot of firewood and a cooler on my recent camping trip. Assembly was a snap and it was light enough that I was able to install the carrier easily, with no assistance. I used the carrier with a Rola expandable cargo bag. Perfect combination! 19476

The basket is good, my problem was with it fitting in my hitch. The first bar was tapered so it started out as 1 1/4 in and ended up 1 3/8 in by the back. only about 1 in would fit into the hitch then get stuck. The company was very active and sent me a new middle bar. Same problem. cleaned out my hitch, tried every other attachment i have and they all fit with no problem. I ended up having to grind down the bar so It would fit. 208338

I received this cargo carrier for Christmas. Shipping was super fast. I can fit about three large storage containers side by side in this. It fits perfectly in the hitch I got from eTrailer. I can't wait to use this for camping! 62485

I felt that the service of this company was of the highest degree, thank you so very much for your help and timely assistance. The cargo carrier I received was well packaged and arrived a few days after the order. The frame and all points of welds appeared excellent, with the metal gauge being very thick and substantial. This is truely a well built-made in the USA product that appears to be suitable for years of use. 28981

Strong, light, just right! Excellent product for the price, really worked well for me. Only issue is if your receiver is recessed and your car is low to the ground it is tough to put the pin in. That's the only downside. The rails are easy to attach bungee cords/tie downs to and it provides about as much space as my back seat. Excellent, solid and looks good, too. 1657

I just received the trailer, only took 3 day via free shipping! I havent used it yet but the product is much heavier / ruggedly built than I thought. Assembly was very easy and fit correctly. Customer service provided order acceptance notice, shipment notice, and a delivery follow up with contact information - wow! 36057

Solid basket for travel. The side rails are great for attaching straps and their height is enough to keep even larger things (30" tall & heavy) from tipping. Its construction is very good so that even if the load isn't perfectly balanced it maintains its position. 328298

Product as discribed. Bending over it to put pin in would be easier if there was a swing pin to fold it up while installing. Some assembly required. This is priced higher than most 2x2 reciever mounts, but 1 1/4 harder to find than 2x2. I find that strange. 95014

EXCELLENT VALUE FOR THE MONEY STOP LOOKING AND BUY IT. MEASURE DISTANCE FROM PIN HOLE IN YOUR HITCH TO EDGE OF BUMPER, DRAW BAR ON BAsKET IS A WEE BIT SHORT. OVERALL - EXCELLENT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. I USE IT ON MY OUTBACK, NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL. 164

The hitches for your 2010 Kia Soul are all class I hitches with a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. Using an adapter will cut that down to 100 pounds. • If you would like a cargo carrier with a ramp I recommend the MaxxTow Aluminum 30 inch by 50 inch Cargo Carrier # MT70100. This carrier itself weighs 60 pounds and can support up to 500 pounds of cargo. This carrier is designed for use with 2 inch hitch receivers and has a ramp that may make loading your lawn mower easier. Since it has a deeper basket design it would be beneficial for you moving large flat bags of soil, or other yard work supplies. There are 4 built in tie down loops...

  • Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2003 Hyundai Elantra
  • For a hitch I would recommend you get the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for the 2003 Hyundai Elantra, part # 24703. I have attached installation instructions and an installation video for you to check out also. The 20x48 Cargo Carrier For 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 52017, would be a good choice for a cargo carrier. You may also be interested in a Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock - Flush Design for 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # RH2-XL.

  • Will Rola Trailer Hitch Mount Railed Cargo Carrier Block Rear Door Operation on a 2010 Toyota RAV4
  • The Railed Cargo Carrier, # 59507, does have a rise of two inches from the top of the receiver opening on the trailer hitch. The outside rails are 5-1/4 inches tall. Total height from the top of the receiver opening to the highest point on the carrier equals 7-1/4 inches. If you measure from the top of the receiver opening up to the farthest part down on the rear door and it is more than 7-1/4 inches, then the cargo carrier will fit. I have included a video review below. If there is...

  • Is a Light Kit Available for the SportRack Steel Cargo Carrier # SR9851
  • My contact at SportRack confirmed that they do not offer a lighting kit for their cargo carriers. The etrailer Cargo Carrier Light Kit # 52014 that you referenced, although intended for use with two specific carriers (# 52017 and # 52018), should be adaptable to your SportRack carrier. It may be necessary to orient and mount the lights differently than how they would be installed when used on either of the specific carriers for which they were designed. At most you may need to drill...

  • Recommended Cargo Carrier And Wiring For 2010 Mercedes E350 With Class l Hitch
  • You will need to check the vehicle owners manual or with your local dealership and find out what the tongue weight capacity is for your vehicle. Or you can check the safety/warning sticker on the hitch. Please keep in mind the hitch weight limit has to accommodate the weight of the hitch cargo carrier itself added to the weight of the loaded cargo. You need to also consider the clearance you have when you are attaching any carrier to the hitch of your vehicle. The carrier you referenced,...

  • Actual Weight Carrying Capacity of Surco # 52017 Cargo Carrier Installed in Class I Receiver
  • When the weight of the shipping box is subtracted, the Surco # 52017 Cargo Carrier weighs right around 45 lbs. Since the Class I receiver on your 2009 Accord has a 200 lb tongue weight capacity, the 45 lbs would be deducted from the tongue weight capacity of the hitch. This would leave a capacity for the carrier of 155 lbs, which is still pretty respectable. You were right on the money.

  • What do I need to use Hitch 24733 with my 2004 Chevy Cavalier
  • The hitch, # 24733, includes all the mounting hardware you need to install the hitch to your 2004 Chevy Cavalier. In order to tow a trailer, you would also need to purchase a drawbar, and the ball itself that sits on the drawbar. The drawbar for this hitch is part # 3592 and the manufacturer says to only use this drawbar and only in the rise position. This bar includes a hitch pin and clip. Your drawbar requires a ball with a shank diameter of 3/4 inch. I have added a page link that...

  • Which Cargo Carrier is Compatible with a Class I Hitch on a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon
  • The available trailer hitches for your 2005 Subaru Impreza are all Class I hitches. This is in reference to how much capacity they have. A Class I hitch will have a gross trailer weight capacity of 2,000 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. They also have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Class II devices, such as the cargo carrier you are looking at, will physically not fit in a Class I hitch. This is so you do not accidentally overload your hitch and cause damage to the hitch,...
