Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2006 Chevy Uplander

Today on this 2006 Chevrolet Uplander we are going to install part number 118396, the t-one wiring harness from Tow Ready. We are also going to install part number 37185, the adapter 4-pole to 7 and 4-pole multi-tool connector. The first step that we are going to do is go ahead and open up the hatch of this vehicle and remove both taillights. Alright and this is our connection point right here. And we are going disconnect. Push down on this tab here and it comes apart. We are going to repeat the same process on the passenger side. Are next step is to take the t-one wiring harness and the 4-pole part. We are going to tuck it behind the bumper here. Have it out of the bottom so we can pull it over by the hitch. And then we are going to take our connection with the yellow and brown wires and we are going to install that on to the wire harness that comes out from the van. So let us go ahead and snap those two together. We are going to leave that be for now. And then our connection with the green wire, that is going to get routed on to the other side of the vehicle, on the passenger side. So we are just going to take this and just tuck it on down and pull it out the bottom too. With this, we are just going to go ahead and reinstall our taillight and hook up the taillight electrical to this connection right here and reinstall the whole taillight assembly back onto the vehicle. 1:13

Let us go underneath the vehicle and route our wires across. Alright, we will go ahead and pull our harness out. Start with our 4-pole. We are just going to go right over to the mount for the hitch. We are just going to tie that off for now and that is going to sit right there. And then we will take our connector with the green wire and route it all of the way across and push it up behind the bumper, up towards the taillight. If the wire is a little bit of a stretch to get to, go ahead and use a piece of wire or something like that and just poke it down through. And then pull the wire harness back up. It is the same thing as before. Go ahead and hook up the trailer wire harness and snap it together. And then we will plug our taillight back on to this part of the harness. Before we put our taillight back on, we need to attach our ground screw to the body work. We will just attach the screw about right here. It will work just fine. We will go ahead and plug it together, just like we did with the first half. And we will just go ahead and reinstall the taillight at this point. 2:45

Then we can go back underneath the vehicle. The next thing we are going to do is take our 4-pole back off. Tuck it off to the side for now. Then we are going to install our bracket for our 7-pole connector. And we are just going to put it over the top of the factory bracket that is with the hitch. Alright, now we are going to take our bracket from the 7-pole and attach it to the bracket that came already installed on the hitch. And we are just going to use the existing hardware that came with the 7-pole to attach. Next we will go ahead and take the 7-pole and install it into the bracket. This also comes with the hardware. I am just going to unbundle it and I am going to run the white wire and the purple wire out of the way and ground it. Okay, we have our wire bundle loosened up now. What we are going to do is just take some tape and we are just going to wrap it up to keep it nice and neat. And then we will leave out our 4-pole flat. Now these other two connections here, the black wire which will be used for 12 volt power supply coming from the battery and the blue wire which would be used for a brake control output, are not going to be used in this instance. Also, the purple wire is designed to be hooked up to a reverse light. Also, that is not going to be used. We are going to be using the 7-pole for a purpose of just the trailer lights alone. We will tape up our butt connectors here, just in case they get used in the future. When we work our way down to the end, you will notice that we have our white wire left over. 5:11

And the white wire, what we are going to do with that, we are going to ground it to the frame of the vehicle. What we are going to do is run our wires behind the hitch here, underneath this sheet metal. What we are going to do is go ahead and run some loom just around to protect the wires a little bit. So when it goes around here it will not get worn out over time. So let us just slip some of this on there. A couple loops of tape to hold it in place. work it down through. What we are going to do is go ahead and fill the connector up with some electrical contact grease. And then that will help protect the contacts inside from getting corroded up from use. And wrap a few layers of tape around that and zip tie it to keep it secure. Run our zip tie through the wires. Alright, next what we will do is take our excess wire and we will just bundle it up. We are going to attach our ground terminal using a number 14 self taping screw that we got from the local hardware store to run that right in. Alright, the next thing that we need to do is go ahead and tie up any loose wires, make sure they stay out of sight and also out of danger from the exhaust or any other sharp edges and we are almost finished. With our wiring complete, that will finish our install of part number 118396 from Tow Ready and our 7 to 4-pole adapter, part number 37185 from Hopkins.

Item 37815 was easy to install. It took me only about 20 minutes in 20 degree weather--on my back in the driveway to complete including drilling holes for the bracket. I plan on using the trailer tow items to pull a double axle car trailer. Although I am very mechanically inclined, your videos and articles made the job a breeze. Your customer service and e-mail support were also excellent. You have an excellent selection of items that appear to be av ailable with no delay. I would recommend your company to anyone with confidence.30036

Very nice. I bought 2 of these and they have the mounting bracket and everything. One of them was perfect, the other had the wrong hardware. There are 4 bolts that mount the unit to the bracket, and the head are small so they recess into the 4 holes in the plastic, but I did not get the right ones in one order. That's okay, I can go buy hardware.9775

Since the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, part # 90250, is wireless, it only needs the Black wire, which is a 12 volt power supply. It also provides some parts for a brake controller. If you have a trailer that requires a 7-Way connector, it probably has electric brakes and you may want to consider a brake controller.
