Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, we're going to install Part #39510 from Tekonsha. This is a Voyager brake controller. The first step is actually put a connector on the back of the truck. The part we're going to use to do that will be 37185. The brake controller and adapter cable also come in the package, Part #39510-3025-p. Now, we'll start off by installing the bracket onto the bumper.

Then go ahead and attach the seven pull connector to the bracket. Okay, with the seven pull connector installed, we can go ahead and start hooking up our wires. We'll take the four pull end and connect it to existing four pulls on the vehicle. We'll hook in the four pull wire connectors together, we'll apply some and I'll let you grease and then use a zip tight to hold everything together and wrap it up with some electrical tape, that way it will make permanent connection out of it. Then we'll take the black and blue wires or we're going to connect them up to a cable that we're going to run up to the junction box underneath the hood.

The part # for the cable would be 10-2-1. We hook up our gray cable to the black and the blue wires can melt the seven pull connector, we're going to match it black to black and then white to blue. Then we'll go ahead and take the purple wire and hook up to reverse size circuit that's on the vehicle and that would be the light green wire which is located inside the harness behind the four pull wire. We'll take a right wire with a ring terminal and ground it to the frame. We'll tape everything together, keep everything nice and neat and then we'll continue on with the gray cable and run it up to the junction box underneath the hood.

Going to your gray cable, run it to the frame and make sure we don't hit anything that's hot like the exhaust or anything moving like these winching components. Next, we need to remove this bracket in the corner, we need to take off the cover for our junction box to get to wires underneath. Remove the bracket with this four bolts then we can unsnap the cover. We'll go ahead and take the bar hold up from the engine compartment and ran it up to the junction box. Underneath the cover, you can see that we have two wires, the blue wire and the red wire.

Now, the blue wire will go to the output from our brake controller, we'll take a white wire and connect that up to the blue wire. We'll cut an existing connector and use a bulk connector. Right next to it is a red wire that's use for power supply to the brake controller or an existing unused stud is right next to it. We'll use the 8mm nut with a 1.5 inch tread pitch to secure a cable to the post. Now, we'll take our remaining black wire in the cable, it will run up to the post on the other side of a junction box. Now, that will be use to install the black wire to the power supply will be a 6mm nut by 1.0 tread pitch. After you attached your black wire to that post, we need to install a fuse. Now we will be using 30 amperes in this slot right here. That will give us power to the wire and we'll be good to go. All we got to do is re-install the covers and the bracket and then we'll get our attention to the brake controller and install on the inside of the vehicle. Now, I'm going to go ahead and install the brake controller. First of all, you pop it from the junction boxes to the inside towards the left underneath the dash and there will be three sockets on the very top. You want to install our adapter cable for brake controller from the second one from the left. Now with Part #3025-p, we'll plug the adapt cord in and then re-install the cap. Now, we'll leave a wire loose and we'll go ahead and knot up the brake controller. First we'll attach the bracket to the dash and we'll make sure that's in a straight line with the vehicle. Before we install a brake controller on the bracket, we'll also take the time out to pre-drill the holes in inside the brake controller body that way we either start everything together once we install it to the bracket. Then we'll attach our brake controller to the bracket and we'll also connect our wires up at the same time. Okay, with our brake controllers installed, we'll go ahead and take a moment to zip tight our wires up. Once they're secured, we can go ahead and put our trailer to it and check the operation. Okay, looks like we have a green LED so that tells us that as we see our trailer back there and it's ready to work. Deploy it to manual override and just you all put and you can tell by the colors from there goes some green to yellow to orange to red. With that that will finish our install of Part # 39510 from Tekonsha, the Voyager brake controller on a 2000 Chevrolet pickup.

weak bracket plug itself is OK. bracket to attach to bumper/frame seems a little flimsy. Haven't had problem yet, just seems a little lacking in strength.5090

Item 37815 was easy to install. It took me only about 20 minutes in 20 degree weather--on my back in the driveway to complete including drilling holes for the bracket. I plan on using the trailer tow items to pull a double axle car trailer. Although I am very mechanically inclined, your videos and articles made the job a breeze. Your customer service and e-mail support were also excellent. You have an excellent selection of items that appear to be av ailable with no delay. I would recommend your company to anyone with confidence.30036

Very nice. I bought 2 of these and they have the mounting bracket and everything. One of them was perfect, the other had the wrong hardware. There are 4 bolts that mount the unit to the bracket, and the head are small so they recess into the 4 holes in the plastic, but I did not get the right ones in one order. That's okay, I can go buy hardware.9775

I use this matching unit to replace the broken cover(plug lock) parts & spring on my hard wired connection. It's a good product unless/until the plastic hinge breaks(especially if one backs into something). It's less costly to strip/swap parts than a new plug + rewiring. Just wish they made a metal version, or could get select "parts". 81184

The product itself is very well made. The 4-pin connector is molded into the product and very sturdy. The 7-pin connector is held closed by a spring and has a foam gasket to keep water out. The 4-pin wiring is only about a foot long, and the additional 7-pin wiring is a bit longer. I do not have a brake controller (but do borrow a trailer with the 7-pin wiring), so I removed those wires. I also hard-wired all the connections, so I can't speak to the quality of the 4-pin vehicle connector. The mounting bracket is thin steel, which worked well for me, as I had to bend the mounting plate to make it work for my installation. The paint on the mounting plate appears to be high quality as I bent the plate and banged it around quite a bit during install and did not nick the paint. The plate is drilled so that is can be mounted with the 7-pin hinge facing up, down, left or right. The hardware is zinc coated, so it should hold up well to the weather. I went ahead and replaced it with SS to make sure. I also replaced the standard nuts with SS nylon lock nuts to make sure nothing would back out due to vibration. If you plan on using the supplied hardware, I would strongly suggest Loctite on the mounting nuts. I installed this on a CX-5 with hitch # 87623, wiring adapter # C56011 and hitch cover # I-728. Over all a very clean installation. The connector is completely hidden inside the bumper, but easily accessible. 72768

After taking my new SUV to the dealer to have it wired to tow my camp trailer, I was told it couldn't be done. They refused to see that the vehicle had the tow package and to help me get the last few critical pieces to tow. I guess they were too busy! So I tried a reputable RV shop that I have worked with before and they quoted me over $400 to custom wire my SUV. I knew there had to be a better option. Looked online and found etrailer. They made it sound easy. I purchased: Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller (39523), Tekonsha wiring adapter (3035P) and 4 pole to 4 & 7 pole adapter (37185). It all arrived quickly and after following the instructions online and even with average mechanical skills, I was good to go in about one hour. Saved about $300 and whipped it out that fast. Why consider any other option. I am extremely satisfied.59917

Got my part at a reasonable price and installed all in the same day. But what really impressed me was a year ago when I installed my trailer brake controler and my SIlverado was suppose to have a OEM tow package..., wrong answer. It had only had trailer lights. So with the help of etrailer and a few emails and the right parts, I got everything installed and have been impressed ever since.41317

Most people are skeptical about ordering online, however, etrailer is a company that has gone above and beyond most. From the intial phone call to the follow up contact. Price was inline with most, packaged arrived as promised along with visual map tracking, and online video made installation a breeze. I bought the hitch and wiring for my Volvo XC90 and would HIGHLY recommend etrailer to anyone! I will definetly use etrailer again in the future35482

Just what I needed, but I am not installing it. Just planning on using it when I need to hook up my seven pin plug and then dis-connecting it. But if I wanted to mount it to my car, your video on the Ford Explorer couldn't make it any clearer. Great job. The installation would probably take about as long as it does to watch the video.34490

  • To convert the 4-way connector to a 7-way on your 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser, you could just install the item you selected, Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole, part # 37185, and just connect the 4-way, the Black power wire and White ground wire of part # 37185. Since the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, part # 90250, is wireless, it only needs the Black wire, which is a 12 volt power supply. The light functions of the trailer will be connected through your existing 4-way which will plug into the back of

  • Can a 7-Way Trailer Connector Be Used To Charge the Trailer Battery
  • The 12 Volt auxiliary terminal on your 7-way connector can be used to keep the battery on your trailer charged. You will need to run a 10 gauge power wire like # 10-1-1 from the 12 volt auxiliary terminal on the 7-Way trailer connector on the trailer to the positive terminal on the trailer battery and ground the negative terminal of the trailer battery to the trailer frame. This will allow you to maintain a charge on your trailer battery, it will not charge the battery from a discharged state

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer
  • On your 2008 Mercury Mountaineer there should be a wiring harness that is attached to the 4-way wiring near the rear of your vehicle that has the brake controller wiring. This is the wiring that you would connect the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole # 37185 to. You would plug your 4-way into the # 37185 and then wire the brake controller output circuit to the blue wire, the auxiliary 12 volt power to the black wire, ground the white wire, and then run the purple to a reverse lockout circuit if needed

It also provides some parts for a brake controller. If you have a trailer that requires a 7-Way connector, it probably has electric brakes and you may want to consider a brake controller. I have included a link to an FAQ article and a link to a video that explains the installation of an ETBC7 kit. You may also
