- Class II Ball Mount Does Not Fit in a Class I Receiver Hitch
- Class I and class II hitches both have an 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inch receiver openings. However, a class I hitch has a towing capacity of 2000 lbs and a tongue weight of 200 lbs, a class II hitch has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs and a tongue weight of 300 lbs. Because of the differences in capacity, the hitch manufacturer designs the receiver shank depth in different sizes. The class I hitch is not as deep as a class II hitch, as you have discovered. - 2004 Subaru Legacy Outback Trailer Hitch with 2 Inch Receiver Opening
- There is no Class III receiver hitch available for the 2004 Subaru Legacy. We do have an adapter that will fit the class II 1-1/4 inch receiver hitch. This allows you to use a 2 inch accessory (see link below). When using an adapter, you must take into account that your tongue weight will be reduced by 50 percent so your bikes and rack could not exceed 100 or 125 pounds, depending on which hitch you purchase.
